Hey Everyone,

So I charged up my batteries and tried to see if the boat would work. The engine started right up, but would only stay running at 1000 or higher rpms. The minute i dropped it to idle the engine would shut off. After that I have trouble staring it back up. I have someone to come look at it later this week. Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be?

Not firing on all the cylinders

U r missing on a cylinder. Find out which one. Check all the wires for corrosion at the coil packs and main 2 coils as well as inside each of the boots on both ends. Also try removing each coil pack and wire brush the pack's grounds. Do a compression test as well. Come back with the results.

I forgot all about that. I had the same problem with the '79 Rude I replaced on my boat. It had zero compression in once cylinder and okay in the rest. It would idle out of the water but put it in gear in the water and it would stall. Not enough power to handle the load.

LOL I forgot to mention rules #1 & #2 when you trouble shoot. Always check compression and spark.

So it ended up being a fuel leak between the top carburetor and the air silencer. I am going to pick up a carb repair kit today and work on it. Any advice for working with these carb repair kits?

I had the same issue on my 86 225.
Mine turned out to be clogged idle jets.
I purchased rebuild kits for all the carbs, removed the carbs took them home cleaned and rebuilt them.
Now it idles great.
Your carbs are different than mine but I would get a rebuild kit for all.
They are straight forward to rebuild just make sure your floats are set per the manual and your carb seal is seated correctly.

I said fuel in your other thread.

Carb kits are pretty straight forward. If you had a fuel leak between the silencer and carb then the gasket must have been ripped or dried out. I'd start off easy and replace that gasket and see what happens. You'll want to make sure the surface of the carb that mates with the silencer is clean of any gasket residue or other stuff. Don't scrape or mar the surface but you can use soft bristle brushes like tooth brushes and some carb cleaner to clean the surface.

I'd try to find a Seloc manual for your motor. It will be like the bible of your boat.
