last year i bought a kayak and began to have dreams i was drowning so i decided to sell it and the dreams stopped. Couldnt get any buyers so now i want to get going but dont want to go alone until i feel comfortable. i went to L.I. when the guys were starting the club but the drive kept me from going again. anyone in brooklyn let me know if i can meet up with you if new to learn with or experienced to learn from. also there is a kayak launch 2 blocks from me in RED HOOK BROOKLYN nice fishing lower ny harbor.

This will not answer your question, but may address your fear a little. please don't force yourself to do something just because you didn't sell your boat.

Ok. That's done. Now if you are going to start up again, and are excited about it, then maybe some real education is in order. Learn a good paddle stroke, and find a self rescue partner. Go to shallow non-moving water and fall out of your boat as many times as is necessary for you to be absolutely confident that you can get back in. Youtube is also a good resource for stroke and rescue information. just be careful who is predenting it.

I know that LI is a drive for you, but it may be worth a years dues to be around lots of guys that are keeping an eye out for each other for a while. We (KFA-NY) also do a self rescue day.

Swimming lessons might not be a bad idea if it applies to you as well.

Good luck and thanks for asking the question.

Julio,

Our next outing is in July on Manhasset Bay. MB is a great place to start off, calm waters and a 5mph zone. You will learn alot being in the club by coming to the outings, but also by meeting experienced kayak fisherman who will gladly show you the ropes. We have members all over the Island and NYC, so you will surely make some new fishing friends.

PM if you are interested.

John
