We are planning on doing our first over night canyon trip this week. We all have experience on someone elses boat , but this is the first time on our own. we have all the necessary safety equipment. What i need to know is you guys opinion about the seas. We plan on leaving Tuesday around 5am and returning weds around noon. it appears that there is a nice window in the wind. Am I right? Am I missing something? We plan on leaving from Montauk and fishing Atlantis (west). Does anyone have a report? or a prediction based on the conditions here is the site i'm getting my weather from.
www.nws.noaa.gov/om/marine/zone/wrdoffmz.htm could you guys look on there and tell me if it looks good. I know this sounds like i need someone to hold my hand , but I am inexperienced in this department and this is my first time posting on this site. I am also young(14) and would like to impress my dad by having this info... Thanks so much You guys are always so helpful.

Boat

WE have a 36' Blackfin with tower and 600 inboard diesel engine. The boat is definitely canyon ready. We all have done canyon trips before just not on this boat. I am just wondering if you think it will be rough out there. I know it can change quickly , but what would your call be if you were on the spot.

thanks

RE THINK WHAT YOU ARE ASKING!!!

iguana i am NOT an expert and have no intentions of trying to sound like one.

just the fact that you asking people you DON'T know whether it is going to be good or bad shows you are NOT experienced....please don't think i am insulting you ....i am NOT.just pointing out the fact that you and only YOU or your father can make that decision .only YOU and your father know what your capabilities are and what your experience is.only you and your father know what condition your boat is in and what your boat is capable of.only you and your father know how experienced you both are.
and the bottom line is only you and your father are going to be out there if it gets bad.

what i am trying to say if you need to come into here and ask for strangers opinions you need to go back and re-evaluate whether you REALLY are as experienced as you think you are .

i hope you understand my point and realize i am NOT trying to insult you in any way.

only you and your father should make the decision to go or not!!!

good luck.

If I were you I would wait for better days.Weather seems very unstable this week.Call me a fair weather boater, but when I'm running to the canyons for the night I wait until I see a 2 day window with 2 to 3 foot seas forecast, and I have a 32' boat. There is no place to hide out there when the weather turns!Plenty of time left in the season and there will be better days to come.Good luck and be safe!

Yo Jack.....

Give the kid a friggin break. I don't suppose you were ever 14 years old? 14....not 24 or 34 or 44. He is just looking for some general advice. Try and write a post where you are not being a hard a$$.

Kip,
Here is another site for weather updates. http://www.buoyweather.com/
I'm a big chicken, and I feel that no matter how much I love to fish, there is no fish out there worth risking my life for. I always add a 50% buffer the reports and ask myself if I can handle that...If there is a question in my mind, I stay where it's safer. This goes for all types of water,be it salt or fresh. I know you mentiond a "window" of good weather. Remember windows have a way of closing. It's better to say..."Boy, you know I should have gone fishing yesterday....the weather ended up being great", then to say "Man...it's getting bad..I hope we can get home". Call me a big chicken....I can take it. But I'd easily give up one day of fishing, to have the rest of my life to fish. I'm not trying to scare you. It's just that things can get bad in a hurry, and you need to know that.

Good luck...and enjoy that boat. I'm a little old, but if your dad is looking to adopt....let me know ;) Tight lines.

rodbuster ???

i am trying to give the kid the best advice i can.

if someone is not comfortable making their OWN decisions about going offshore THEY DO NOT BELONG THERE!!!!

been there done that, have over 40 years offshore fishing experience with about 15 of those years on commercial boats.

if you consider my advice hard #*# then so be it.

good luck to you.

I AGREE WITH CAPT JACK

i agree 100% with both capt jack posts.

unless you know the people and the boat extremely well ,you have no idea what experience they have and what condition their boat is in. therefore you have no information to base your approval or dis approval of them heading out to the canyon.

capt jack gave iguana the best advice available"IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE ABOUT MAKING YOUR DECISION TO GO OR STAY YOU DO NOT BELONG OUT THERE.

Why can't I get a straight answer? This is not brain surgery her. I just asked if you think it will be rough out. I'm asking you to make up my mind for me. Get off of your soap box and stop lecturing everybody.... Thanks for the people who tried to be constructive and helpful.
thanks

straight answer iguana

STAY AT HOME.

although it is still too early to absolutely sure about the weather,
the chances are better for sloppy seas conditions, expect 3-5 foot on tuesday with a possible swell as well.

as for the lecturing,
these people in a kind way are trying to tell you that,
you guys are not experienced enough to do this ALONE.

how do they know this ?
BY THE TYPE OF QUESTIONS YOU ASK.

as for calling people idiots who are trying to help you,
ask your DADDY why that is wrong.

as for you catching more fish at 14 than other members,
good for you,
but with your attitude and desire to run offshore without a clue,
YOU MIGHT NOT GET TO SEE 15.

use your brain
not your mouth,
and try to be safe.
that is what these people are telling you.

again for the STRAIGHT ANSWER:

STAY HOME
BAD WEATHER
LIMITED EXPERIENCE

Go For it Iguana

We will be going to the dip on Wen. in a 26 World Cat, but while we are getting our butts kicked with the rollers we will understand that the chances of a good catch with the seas being churned up for so long are slim to none, while you have the boat to handle the predicted weather that does not mean you are going to catch. It will most likely be a waste of time and fuel but a "good day at work..., you can't win if you don't play......you only die once..." You guys have to start somewhere running your own boat out there but this is a lousy week to do it, is it unsafe? Not if your boat is in good shape and the predicted forcast is correct. Will it be fun? Not likely, but if you guys are like me you will be there anyway. Don't let these guys get you down, they mean well and for the most part they are right, but then again they most likely don't run with scissors.

Iguana, from the info that I see available at this time it would appear that Tuesday may still be pretty rough for an offshore trip. You might be better off doing a shark trip a little closer in. At the top of this page you'll see a bar that says "conditions". Just click this bar and you can gather info at various areas. If you still intend on going tuesday morning check this along with noaa weather predictions and any other weather info you can find. If the seas are high and the wind over 15mph it could prove to be a very long and bumpy ride. Remember, safety first. Those fish will still be there next week. Good luck.

iguana, if you really, really want to impress your dad

tell him that, even though you really, really want to go fishing very much this tuesday, you are in this game for the long haul, and are willing to wait for better sea conditions, because you want to be around to go fishing with your own son, someday.

is he 14?

iguanas last post really doesnt sound like that of a 14 year old.
but on the other hand I agree with the others. YOU must feel comfortable with the conditions. Whats rough to you may not be that bad for others.

Yes he is 14 and he is my son... I'm Jim Captain of the boat. Sorry to all about his last post he's just excited. Anyway we do have quite a bit of experience offshore and canyon fishing. It looks like we will do just a day trip Tuesday to the edge depending. Thanks for the patience guys and I apologize for the little guy.

hey capt. jack, is it so wrong to ask another fisherman his OPINION about whether or not the seas are fishable?

Iguana, stay home. if there is a window, the window is really tight indeed. by the way, this is my OPINION. take it or leave it...

good luck and stay safe...

I agree with Capt jack. Offshore can be flat one minute and trouble the next. The only one that can decide if they want to take the chance of a canyon trip is the Capt of the boat, I shouldn't say, go for it. It is the beginning of the change in weather, all kinds of **** can happen. Stay inshore kid, you and your father don't seem to have the know how. Let the big boys get them off shore tuna.....

Stay Home

You should stay home and wait for better days. Weekend looks better than Tuesday or wednesday. The ocean needs to settle down about.
Need to get good weather , buoy, ocean temp reports and hopefully you will not burn fuel for nothing.
We are entering the time of the year when the weather starts changing quickly. The only person thats make a desicion for yourself is you, Your father should look out for your safety first and worry about you catching tuna, mahi or any othe pelagic fish doen the road.
