A buddy of mine knows that I enjoy fishing, and provided some gear to build on what I have. Of the items he gave me, are two Penn 104 reels which I've used and enjoy. Another friend, my roomie has a few striper trips planned for the fall, and doesn't think that the 104's are big enough for the trip. I thought I'd turn to the brains of the site to let me know if I need to go larger.
Thanks

Location has something to with it too.

Will there be heavy currents?

Rocky bottom/boulders?

Will it be a private charter or a more crowded open boat?

Will you be bait fishing, jigging, trolling, etc...?

All this will determine the class line/rod/reel that will be suitable.

penn 104

We'll be right at the indian river inlet. I've not fished there before. The plan as he describes is to put on a fish finder rig, eel, open spool with the thumb ready to strike. The only striper i've fished for was on a party boat, dropping the line, and waiting, rented rod. We'll be going off of his boat, 21ft crusier which we've taken out 15 miles for sea bass and fluke.
Thanks for the assistance people

u can catch stripers, or any fish for that matter on small gear...a friend of mine caught one on a scooby doo combo set...youve just gotta know how to fish light tackle..a newbie will prob snap off a 40 inch striper on that setup...i would respool with a braided line like powerpro..u can get 50lb strength in a line thats as thin as 12lb test..the added strength will guarrantee no loss of fish...good luck
