hey guys, my girl got me a gift card to dicks sporting goods online, and there selection of reels are very whats the word, bare. i was looking for a cod and deepsea seabass reel but dont know what to get.
they have the Shimano Torium ,Daiwa Saltist, Shimano Tekota and the penn reels. gti and senator. plz need me. thanks again.

Can not go wrong with either the Saltist or the Torium. Depending on the line capacity required (depth you will be fishing) Saltist 30 or Torium 20 should suit you well for most conditions.

The toriums and saltists are excellent but we would need more info on the fishing situation to select a size.Depth of water fishing,line test mono or braid,and rod you will use?I agree pretty much with what fishgeg said but specifics would help.

well, i was trying to get on a cod trip or a deepsea seabass trip. i really dont know the depths probably around 100+. and i also like to use mono compared to the braided. the rod will be custom made depending on what reel i buy. thanks again.

You dont need a recommendation, apparently you have your own ideas. You must be driving a rolls. since you claim that the torium, saltist are too lousy for your taste. Dont know what you would consider first rate. Deepsea fishing for cod and seabass is usually very deep, 100 feet being fairly shallow, and if you like mono those reels arent for you. You need to buy something as large as a 4/0 to hold enough 50 mono to fish the real depth. The classic sailing sunday the 17 is talking about 320-380 feet, you are going to need lots of mono.

Relax guy, i never said those reels are garbage. i just said there wasnt a large selection at dicks sporting goods online. if its recommended to put braided then i will.

A Shimano Torium in either the 16 or 20 would be plenty for seabass or the average brown bottom dweller.

Call me a simple man, But my cod rods are 7&8'customs by Kevin Bogan, the reels are penn 320 & 330 GTI w/power pro braid,15yd top shot of mono. 12 yrs of reliability. Replaced the drags a few times prior to any failure. last year I upgraded the bearings.
