There are so many decisions to make as an angler. I have tried to get out for Black fishing this year but as we all know there haven't been great reports of Blackfish around. Where should I try, Brooklyn, Captree, Montauk, Port Jefferson, Huntington, Flushing just to name a few. Well I live on the North shore of Long Island, so it's going to be the North Shore. The next decision was what type of rod and reel to take. I took my 7' St. Croix (MF )matched with Shimano Tekota for the deeper water spooled with 30lb. Power Pro. I also took a Custom 6'6'' light spinning rod with a light Shimano spinning reel also with Power Pro. I decided the night before to go on the James Joseph a solid boat that I haven't been on for a while. The boat left the dock at 6am with about 20 seasoned Black fishermen. I thought that we were going to fish shallow water but after a 40 minute ride we anchored up in about 40-60 feet of water. The tide was ripping until about 11 am and only a very few fish came up and not too big. At slack high tide fish started to become active and within 90 minutes I had two big togs (yes I won the pool). He bite slowed down throughout the day but I managed to get my 4. The last 90 minutes many people switched to porgy rigs and had a slow but steady pick. The mates are top notch they were always at the rail as soon as there was a fish on the surface. There were 3 mates for 20 guys a great ratio. Also the Big Black Labrador was on the boat keeping law and order.
