It's not easy getting up early to fish when your shift ends at 2 am but I managed to get the boat set up and gassed up and be on my way to the grounds at 9 am on a gorgeous fall morning. I found life immediately just outside the harbor were the birds showed me the way to huge schools of schoolie bass. I landed seven on berkley gulps using light tackle. They were all in the 16 to 20 inch range. I did however have one bigger fish break me off. Then I made a long run to the east to look for more surface action but found nothing. I ended up on a deep reef and had a steady pick of short sea bass and blackfish. I then moved to a shallower reef but before I could start togging false albacore started busting all around. I broke out the deadly dick and started casting and chasing, or chasing and casting. I had one follow me up to the boat and not take it. Then finally just as I was getting ready to give up I nailed one. The reel screamed and the fight was on. It was really exciting and when I saw color just behind the boat grabbed the net and scooped up the speedy pelagic. After that they disappeared. I went back to blackfish and it was nothing but little dinks. I ran back closer to home for one last drop and had a pick of shorts that were at least close. Most were 15 to 15.5 inches. I managed one nice keeper at 21 inches. There is a lot of life out there...
