I was down in the Outer Banks a couple years ago and there were tons of monster skate. The sharpies surf casting for cobia kept hooking into them, but I never saw them land one. They said that the skates would belly down in the sand and become impossible to move, so you'd have to wait for them to start swimming again to gain any ground. I watched one guy fight one for about a half hour before he decided it wasn't worth it and broke it off. He said they sometimes ran over 100 pounds around there (sounds a little high, but I guess it's possible). Anyway, props to that guy in the picture for landing a tough fish!
