My friend is getting his boat delivered this March. Its a 23 ft Trophy boat and I was wondering if any boat that size should have any business being that far out to the Hudosn Canyon or Mudhole at the least.

I read an article on this site that a couple guys went down in mudhole witha 23-24 ft outfit.

Thanks for your comments in advance!!

Long Way To Go

I personally think we mostly over run the fish, there are some great places Inshore or 30 miles out that produce some great fish. I have a 23' hydra-sport and we run to the cigar from Avalon NJ about 30 miles and I would say we had better success rate then runnin gto the canyons, what are you targeting?

Breaks

Breaks,
where are you leaving from, just wondering? If from the south shore of the Island you'll be more likely to be fishing the 20-25 fathom line on nice days.Thats about it.You can find sharks there and when they make a run,you can find bluefin tuna within your reach.

101 gallons of gas

thats how much gas the 23 foot trophy holds.
depending on the power option your friend chose, you could expect about 2 miles per gallon, with your boat loaded with fuel , gear, people and bait.

so your max range is about 200 miles.
using the 1/3 rd method,
1/3 there
1/3 home
1/3 reserve
you have enough gas for about a 60-70 mile run,
weather permitting ofcourse.

i suggest you take along a experienced person on your first few trips.

but its a "trophy" bayliner

yes you are right makomatt

i was trying to be diplomatic about it and not start another fight here.

dont worry, one local trip in a 2-3 foot chop and they wont even think of trying offshore.

plus with a single "black anchor" on the stern, its not the best idea either.

The canyon is a bit far to go in a 23. It can be a flat ride out but it gets ****ty fast. I wouldnt be out that far in a 23. But the boat is fine for fishing a bit closer to shore, say up to the 30 mile range. I fish offshore in a 21 center console, up to about 30 miles off. you have to watch the weather, know what to look for in the weather " try to under stand the patterens so you know what to expect" and lastly you just have to know what your doing i recomend taking someone who has been offshore many times before you and knows how to run a boat when it gets nasty. there in alot of good fishing to be found with in 30 miles. For one sharking is done mostly with 20-30 miles off. Bluefins are scattered around the offshore reefs, and mahias are always a great time and the laast few weeks of august are readly avaliable inshore. if the boat has a tralier take it to "the end" put it in at gone fishing and run to the butterfish hole 17 miles from the point . great tuna fishing can be had here the whole month of august bluefins and when the waters right longfins. Many people call me crazy for shark/tuna fishing in a 21 footer but i know how to run a boat and the boat runs well in a sea.

Thank you for your advice guys!!!

We wanted to head out for Tuna and Mahi next season and we were thinking about heading to Canyons.. BUT NOT ANYMORE!!! Well atleast i'm not. I know how bad it can get. I went to Mayan Rivera in Mexico this summer for some wonderful WAHOO and Mahi fishing.. and i was on a 31 ft boat and the seas where high that day!! and it was alittle un-nerving, but all in all i was able to land a Bull mahi and was only out there for like 4 hours trolling the waters...and just being on a 23 ft i can imagine what it would be like if we were to hit some waves out there.

P.S

We were gonna launch out from Sheepshead Bay, New York

THANKS!!!!!

Angrymahai, what brand is that 21' CC ? We have run to the 30 mile mark in my buddies 21' hydra-sport, holds 85 gal. Love that boat so much I bought a 2003 21' CC hyrda sport with yammy 150, T top and full electronics. Like you said there is some great fishing with-in the 30 mile area. This boat for me was perfect, I can run to the in-shore/ off-shore hot spots on nice days and still back bay fish with the family.

the make of my boat is a VIP. you proably never saw one. made in FL has a kind of a cenrty/contender cross look for power its got a 150 yammy. pretty good boat runs dry,as far as CCs go, loaded with everything T-top, duel livewells, washdown, hydro steering, duel batts, and full electronics. The hydra sprot is a nice hull too very large for the size. The 23 CC they put out is real nice.

Hey Breaks212,
Take the advice of these other posters. Hudson is a bit far, fish closer.
But just remember all of the fishermen who went out fishing and never came back. If the seas are bad, you have no right being out of the inlet, much less 80 miles out. Don't go out, get beat up in some snot, and say "The guys on the Noreast board said I can do this"!
Watch your weather and pick your days. I don't want to be reading about you in Newsday next year, with a picture of your loved ones in grief. Can it happen to you (or any of us), sure, just ask the wives of the guys lost during the Hudson tourny.
Be safe.

Hey Breaks
It's nice to dream during the off season! The canyons are just toooooo far for a 23' anything. Bayliners are now pretty good boats.....for the bay and inshore fishing. The mud hole is well within your reach on a NICE day. Please use some common-sense. I spend most of the summer and fall in the canyons and have seen a few small boats off there....and I always have the same thought....What were they thinking when they left the dock? I fish mainly on a 43footer and still have to pick my days. This fall was very difficult to get offshore because of the wind.

I once saw...

a 21ft Robalo dual console tied off at the tip of the Hudson. As I was trolling by I noticed two guys on board and a blue plastic 55 gal drum in the center of the boat just before the windshield. They also happened to be hooked up and they boated a nice 75-100 pound class yellowfin. I trolled around some more and passed again -- and they were hooked up again!!! That's when it hit me. The two gentlemen on board were Jesus Christ and Saint Peter enjoying a Busman's holiday!
