and when you change it- do you guy's fill the reel ? or use dacron backing?
i'm talking about the 50's for sharkin. with 80 lb test mono.
when i'm done for the day ,on the way home, i let about half the spool out. with nothing tied to the end , and i drag the line behind the boat.then i or whoever is on the rod pack it on the reel evenly with a wet cotton glove. the line seems to last longer that way.
the question is-
should i re-spool everything this year? you really cant tell how the line is untill you let out a couple hundred yards or so.
do you guy's get more than one season out of your line?

F/F,
The correct answere is at least once a season,However I am guilty of leaving it on for two seasons because I don't get that many trips out due to wind and rough seas with a 25'er. If there is any abrasion, get rid of it.Ialways use 80 lb big game but this year I spooled up with Moimoi Diamond. Its supposed to be the best color for chunking, limited light travels down with that line.

i'm using momoi high vis yellow

and the shop gets like 60 bucks a reel to fill them i have got more than one season out of my line some years.
i was just going over my stuff and thinking how nice the line looks on the top, but i know after like 100 yards or so, its going to look like a telephone cord. bieng packed on the reel for so long.
if this is true should i wait intill july to fill them or do it now? because the line is going to be under the pressure of just sitting on the reel would a couple months of just sitting, packed tightly, take its toll on the line?

Change the order....

Hey FREAK ~

I know guys that change the line from one spool to another....this way the underneath line becomes the top on another reel.

Not a bad idea when you think "How often does the 300-600 yard mark even come off the reel in the first place?" Techinically speaking, that is "new" line.

If you had a BIG fish ~ then I wouldn't do it with that reel. But other than that ~ the notion has some merit.

I change as often as needed which for most of my offshore stuff means at least 1 time a year, however, this year I have 4- 30 wides that saw such little action last year, and after examining the line it looks fine, no change there. I go with Berkley Big Game, 80# on the 50 wides, and 50# on the 30 wides.

Always store you reels out of the sunlight, as that breaks down the line, and it is not something you can detect by looking at or feeling it.

Line Change...........

I use izorline spectra backing and
izoline mono on all my big game reels.
I buy the bulk spools. approx. 2200yds of mono. I respool after every trip.
only the outfits that I used get respooled.I haven't had to buy mono in
a couple of years and I think I have enough for this year.spectra is exspensive but it last 10 times longer than mono,so your really saving money in the long run.

You surprise me.With all those custom sticks you must have and those fancy Newell and Shimano reels you don't change your line? You really surprised me,I'm shocked,I don't know if I can get over this,LOL.True, its all quality brands your using but I wouldn't want to lose that fish of a life time because of old line.

Is it in writing>?

By the way is there anything written in stone on when to change your line if it is not nicked frayed or damged? I don't recall anyone proving it wrong? A other topic is the braids? i am going to keep using mine yr after yr. till i see it poping fish. But I just startd last yr so i cannot give you an update on it. but i will not change my braids unless i get spooled!:)

UV can damage your line, and you won't see or feel it, and it may not be the area you test for breaking strength either. Always store rods in the dark to protect, and so they get a good rest and then just change when you feel it is necessary.

On the big guns I don't like to take any chances, and change the line more often as the good fish are too far and inbetween.

Braids............

Braids, spectra, are not affected by
ultra v like mono is, nor does salt water have the same affect that it does on mono. Unless there is a shelf
life for braids/spectra it should last a long time.I have been using mine for
5 years and have not had any break offs
yet, until I do its there to stay.

Cheapest Thing

With all the money we spend on good reels and custom rods or even good rods off the rack it is proably the cheapest thing to do.

I was advised a while ago, even for inshore stuff to change it every year.

I can't imagine not doing it.

Shame on you TOG/M!;)
