You should throw in a picture of the Viking Star too . . .

Probably more cod caught on that one Viking boat than both of those other two put together.

Ya know back in early '80s, when I worked on the old Bluefin II down in Freeport, we used to call the Al the "White over Green Fishing Bouy."

Steam 2 hours off and there the Al would be on the horizon, a nice 65' marker bouy pointing right at a good spot.

The Starstream II was sold about 5 years ago to some guy in New Jersey. She was subsequently sold to the current owner somewhere in the Keys. Last I heard thats where she is running from.

Boy does the pic of the starstream bring back great memories. As a kid I would ride my bike down to Freeport and hop aboard for the day/night bluefish runs and winter cod/bottom trips. I miss ther Starstream, but the Capt Lou fleet had to make way for thier new at the time VII boat. Anthony used to be great with the Starstream, probably even better then his predecessor Richie Kessinger.

AS to how many Cod were caught- my estimate would be 68,000 on the Starstream. Figure 55 cod trips per year, average 25 passengers each keeping five cod, by ten years. Do the math it's incredible but true.

The captain Al...boy she is a wet boat. Never leave gear in the bow or prepare for it to be soaked.

Newellman, nice pics. Did some more up and email to me if you get a chance.

Good Memories

Hey EC. Thank you for posting up the
pics of the Starstream and the Al.
I get a warm and fuzzy feeling when I
think back about the codfishing we had.
I was a cod fishin fanatic during those
"cow country" days in the 70's and 80's.
It was quite the chess match between
those 2 boats. The starstream having the
speedier boat and naturally the pick of
the first wreck. Im not sure if the
younger guys out there realize how good
the cod fishing was during that time.
Our area was host to some major slobs,
with 40's a common sight. The biggest
I ever heard of locally was a 68lber.
taken on the Streamer. The codfishing
would kick off on Thanksgiving, and
usually there would be large hangers
all around. I remember one Thanksgiving
when a Capt Al regular "Roosevelt Rogers" had 8 fish over in the neighborhood of 45 lbs. That man had
an uncanny knack of catching the pool
cod with about 1 minute to 3 horns.
I still fish with Capt Tommy on the Al,
and I can tell you he misses those
days big time. He is one sharp Captain.
Regards and tight lines.

Starstream I?

Anyone remember the first Starstream - I think it was black. Took my first bluefish trip on that as a kid. Might even have been a wood boat - not sure.
Got to fish with Richie on a friend's boat a couple of years ago - wife didn't understand why this was like playing catch with Willie Mays...

Yeah....looking at those picks of the Starstream really does bring back memories.

My favorite type of trip on that boat was the offshore cod specials that use to leave at 3AM during the 80's. They use to have some really great deep-water wrecks that not too many boats knew about. The size of some of the cod, pollock and hake caught on these trips was amazing. I caught my personal best cod of 52 lbs and Pollock of 41 lbs on one of those trips and saw a codfish of 72 lbs taken. Another thing that amazed me was the size of the bergals taken on those wrecks. I mean I caught a few that approached 5 lbs.

A lot of the current sharpies learned how to fish on that boat. Was sad to see it go.

Had some great overnight Tuna trips, especially when Bob Nagy ran the boat. Usually was quite an experince :).

Skatemaster,

Richie has not run the offshore trips on the Lou VII or Starstream for quite a few years. Anthony Gillipsie has run them pretty frequently, but most of the time Capt. Keith runs them on the Lou boats. They have good numbers and know how to anchor that boat up. Fishing is great. On one trip this year anthony rtan the boat and did a drop over one of his formerly "great" Codfish pieces. He said the piece we fished would be his "bail out spot" where if a trip went wrong he almost guranteed success in catching Cod at that drop. This year we caught nothing at that piece. He steamed further south and we caught seabass and ling. MikeTuna was on that trip.

GREAT COD PARTY BOATS

Now this is my kind of post, if you really want to put pics of boats that have conquered many GADUS MORHUA then what about the trade winds that lays in captree, that is the original viking starlite, or the capt. andy also at captree , that was the old capt. joseph many a cod have met their demise on these vessels, how about the Capt. scotty or the sea pidgeon, the peconic queen or how about the viking 7 al lindroth ran the boat and speedy hubert worked deck, I could go on but i'am actually starting to become depressed.

The Capt. Al a wet boat? Well they don't call her the big green submarine for nothin' the STARSTREAM is now owned by some lady and was repowered with twin 3406E's 19.7 at 1950 not bad, but then again gulf crafts can get up and boogie like a raped ape with not alot of power...

googin,

I see that you are a die hard. Where did you track the SS down to. Last I heard was from when I was fishing on the Robbie S. out of Islamorda, I ran into Richie the young mate from the Starstream. He told me the SS was in Key West.

I remember she was going to get re-powered or sold, and replaced by a 112 foot Capt Lou VIII. They sold her, but never replaced her. Instead the Lou boats remain at just the VI and VII.

Is she fishing or a private vessel?

I also know that Richie Kessinger is down in Florida now. It would be neat for him to take her back and start doing some offshore wreck fishing in florida.

Here's a pic of the new queen of the offshore wreck fihsing grounds.
-She's my baby! Luv that boat!

Your baby

The Capt Lou VII is nice, fast as **** but arrow boats look like they were punched in the nose as a child, give me a lydia like Speedy's new one 90 ft, triple 12v92's ummmm to bad he uses that big rocket ship strictly half day. To me that is a crime against God to have a vessel like that flukin' every day, But he wrote the check for her not us. mikey's 7 boat is nice, does he carry any people on her though? the 6 boat isn't bad either, I really like Gulf crafts.

If you like Gulfcrafts, then you will love any boats built by BREAUX. The old ZEPHYR V was the finest small aluminum party boat that i have ever been on. As stable as they come, great ride in a sloppy sea and pretty quick. Along with the Tampa VI, this is the only other aluminum boat that i miss out of the bay.

By the way, isn't Speedies new boat, the old OCEAN CITY PRINCESS, which was the largest boat built by Lydia?

EC NEWELL MAN*

The Zephyr is a similar design to the Blue Heron pictured below.

googin,

If you fish mate on the Speedy for so many years you might jsut know a guy I'm taking my Capt's license course with. He's a young guy about mid twenties named Brian. He tells me he works for Speedy during the summer.

As for Mikes boats- yes they are very busy. He does many offshore trips during the winter - not as many as Bogan on the Jamaica, but I like the Lou VII and her crew better. You get the same guys going year in year out on these trips. Its cool to see the same faces all the time.

AS for hte Lou VII- I've been out in rough water with in her and she does great. I own my own boat, but during the winter fish on the Lou ships. It's amazing how they started and where they are now.

BTW I think I recognize the name Noress. I think you in Freeport... but I can't quite place a boat to the name.

Newellman, keep those nostalgic pics coming.

E.C- I have fished that boat the miss blue heron from miami, she,s a quick little boat, I guess we made about 17.5 and the skipper wasn't really runnin her hard. About speedies boat yes she's the old O C PRINCESS he sold Ray etels boat to some guy down in Virginia I think, that boat was the old White Star from barnegett NJ. His gulf craft was the capt. billy van, she was built right next to the starstream down in patterson at the tibbs/gulfcraft yard. My favorite boat though is larsons miss barneget light...
