Just back.

With MRFC's approval the DEC will submit a season that runs 5/15-labor day with a 20.5" size limit and four fish limit. But with that we are seriously looking at a full season closure for '09 if we go over quota for '08 and all other tangibles remain the same. Any other option, shorter season, etc. would pretty much assure the same closure.

What also came out of it, was that managment seriously needs to come up with realistic numbers from the "Technical Committee" as to the true state of the biomass. If the biomass numbers change, we may see that NY didn't meet quota all along and this would open the decision for next years reg to comply with those new figures.

It was a great turnout from what I understand and saw. The room had a max. occupancy of 90 and there was at least that in the room. The hallways were somewhat crowded and the parking lot was beyond full. DEC suggests we contact our federal reps expressing true biomass figures and any other concerns we have. We should know final decision some time mid to late April. If I missed anything please add......

In my understanding if we increase the size limit the result will still be the same. Large fish = Larger Weight.

I would have been there if I didn't have Midterms this week. I'm all the way up in Oswego. Its nice to see that a good number of people showed up

Size limit

How much could you posibily raise the size limit? That is good for the party boats because it keeps there season open with the hope of maybe just maybe coming home with a keeper fish. I have heard someone talking about keeping the first four fish that you catch. This makes more sence than un hooking 30 fish just to posibly get one keeper.

Raising the size limit will do nothing. The problem is the MRFSS data collection in our area. Any season longer than thrity days will end up in them reporting us overharvesting, because they are using huge numbers for our participation, and use less-than-arbitrary methods of collecting data. If you remember, the season opened up on a day's notice last year, and they reported that we landed 8,300 fish in eight days, w/ crummy weather.

Also, if we stay on target, and other states overfish, NMFS is still threatening to shut down the whole coast, because they want coastwide management.Read the thread in FM.

I really think some people better think twice before posting there catches on this board or any other board. If you dont tell them how much your catching they dont know. But if you have captins on here trying to drum up business telling every one how they hammered them
well then.... I think you get the drift. I`ll take the 20.5 but will only keep one or two a day

Fluke regulation

You know this it nothing but BIG BULL/S,I thing some peoples from Peta are in command and they do what they want to do whit all the regulation and closed the season when they feel to do so,in the mean time we the fisherman's still argument about sizes limit and all this B/S,I see some people that posted hear that they don't care if some Captain loose they boat or go broke or Tackle shop closed they doors or they loose they houses or they loose they way of living.. course they just don't care they make they living do it something else.Just remember what go around comes around and our great nation it's in big trouble and who know what can happens in the near future...God have Mercy of us......Fredd

Fred you are right. What we need is a series of orginized demonstrations. Get as many fisherman together and picket the DEC or Governors offices. Have spokespersons to address the media with facts about the economical impact. Then maybe we will be able to neutralize the PETA effect.

wouldnt it be better if the made the regs 3 fish at around 16 inches or more.this way less fish would be caught and tossed back which is why many fluke dont make it.

Way to many fish would be kept, Your idea solves one problem of release mortality and makes another problem (overfishing) worse. The higher size limit takes into account mortality rates.

Remember alot of people go out and fish and may only catch 6 fluke all day. Now in your theory if there are 2 people on the boat all those fish would be kept or lets say 5 would be kept and 1 was under 16inches and released. Now under the new regs all would be released and maybe 1 would die, but 5 would live.

So what is better for the fisheries 5 fish being kept and one released or 6 fish released and maybe one dies.
