How would you rate yourself as a fisherman? Are you in the top 10 % of the guys who catch all the fish? Be honest!

The thing I love about fishermen is they are always in a competition. Since I am also very competitive, I fit right in! Not a single trip goes by on our boat that we don't argue this age old question, "How Do You Rate?". Most of the time it depends on the species we are fishing. Some of the regular crew are talented fluke fishermen, some are excellent with tog, some have a knack with stripers, etc. I would say I am NOT at the top of any of those categories! However, I do hold my own on a trip-by-trip basis. The most fun of any trip is the debate over who is the best "fisherman" on the boat. Funny thing is, we all have our days and that is what makes you look forward to getting up early the next day to do it all over again!

NO, I am not in the top 10%...I plan to be one day!!!

I would consider myself in the top 25% all things considered. I don't strive to be in a percentile, but I try my very best to catch fish when I make a trip.

I don't like to take long trips with my boat, strictly a bay fisherman. That'll probably put me in the middle of the pack, 50%. That's OK though.....I still manage to keep my box freezer full!

When I go fishing with the pro's, that's when I like to bust chops, and get into some trash talking friendly competition. I will rag on your equipment, rigs, technique, and if I catch the most or biggest, I won't let you forget it, LOL. I get my share right back though, if I don't. Makes the trip alot of laughs :)

On the Montauk fluking boats, when we make our yearly vacation outing, I'm probably the top 5%, if not better.

What is this am I hot or not??

I don't know where I fit in. I like to rate my days on the water by other fisherman I can see not what I hear. I love being set up within sight of another boat and landing fish when I know he/she is not. It gives me some sense that I know what I am doing. Most of the time I try to steer clear of the crowds and hit my "secret spots" as far as my rating goes I would say I am in the top 25% as well. That's probably only because 50% of the people out there can't even drive a boat let alone fish but that's a story for another time. It does however come down to species targeted ie. I can't catch a fluke to save my life. I have a knack for finding stripers and when the blues are hot you will find me right smack in the middle with a fly rod. So it comes down to type of fishing ie. chunking, plugging, livelining or flyfishing. In that case like I said top 25% flyfishing, livelinig and chunking. Maybe top 50% plugging. Like anything some seasons are better than others. My percentages will probably drop now that I have another kid on the way.

My turn I guess. As a whole my boat the "Bad Attitude" has always been into fish, from the productive flounder days until I just sold it.We used to sit in a pack of boats flounder fishing and would out fish the surounding boats,we used to love that.We always did good with the bass until this past fall(I couldn't buy a bass in a fish store if I wanted to)We always had at least one tuna per trip inshore and usually always a shark. We also had nice numbers of fluke along the beaches. From what I read and hear,my crew and I are in the top % of the guys catching and not just fishing.

rate this

OK,in my yacht club,ask anybody.
I stink.I keep trying, but I seem to have more of a share of bad luck than alot of others.I captained my boat to two first places and one fourth place in fluke tourneys, but I didn't catch them.
I am also the only boat in my club that ever heads offshore. There ,I can say I am the only one in the club to ever bring fish back to the dock over 100 lbs.Something I have done on several occasions with a yellowfin approx 125 lbs,and a few sharks over 100.I have also lost at the boat several sharks that went over 200.
But I keep at it.

fishologist II ....

DETAILS DETAILS DETAILS!

It is all about the DETAILS! Pay close attention to what the "good fisherman" are doing around you ~ and success will eventually swim your way!

I would certainly agree, I would rate myself differenty depending on the specie of fish.

Hi Paulie,

It goes like this. If you are a lousy fisherman they make you the mate!

If you are a lousy mate they make you the captain!

Now where do I go from here????? I hate golf! I'm too old for all those beautiful young ladies and besides my 40th wedding anniversary is this year so I had better behave myself!

My eyes are going and I guess that is why the rods I build have the guides going around the blank or is it the Irish whiskey???

Sooo I enjoy sleeping or naping on a boat that is underway.

My wife always starts out with a bang! (no not that kind). She always gets a good start, then I get mad (I'm very competative)and start catching fish and always beat her out! When I'm fishing with friends on a long hard offshore trip or trolling parachutes for stripers off of Montauk, I'm always the last one fishing! A fish will be hooked and it will be asked "who wants this one" and no one will answer, they are all too tired out! I'll take the rod! All these guys are younger than me (some are younger than my kids, but I'm always the last one handling a rod! YEAH, I think I'm in the top 10%!

Tough One

I would say that would be in the top 30% maybe. I have learned alot more in the last year or so with some of the guys I fish with. I had my fair share prior to that also.

Like Hipshot said you got to stay in the water. Remides me of a good anology.

Well-I can carry a tune

We have a motto on my boat-"if they're catching ,we're catching and more".My forte is singing(you must sing on my boat) and telling jokes.Thats why I have sharpies as my crew-to make me look good.As you know my crew can be interestingPix of my crew
So I would say I'm in the top percentile of "Crafty old bastards";)

Self Analysis

Blackfish---I suck
Porgies---Why bother
Fluke----when i'm older (no offense to the older fisherman)
flounder---where?
Blues----as good as the next guy
Bass----in my area (brezzy point) I'm pretty good.
FWIT----In 20 years of fishing I still never met a person I couldn't out cast

I'm probably in the 50% category- been fishing since a kid so better than the occasional guy but I don't get out more than 10-12 times a year so not a sharpie. This is why I joined this board- to learn about techniques and tackle so that I can do well when I do get out!!!

It goes both ways for me....

there are days when me and my crew are bailing fish as those around us watch in disbelief.
And there are as many days when we just watch in disbelief.

But that's fishin.

I think there was a time in my life, when I was younger, single and barely employed; that I was on my way to being in the top 10%. But then I got married, employed and had children and we all know how that stuff could put a dent in your fishing time. But I wouldn't want to change a thing.:)

i dont know where i would stand, but maybe someone can tell me....i rarely ever get skunked (KNOCK ON WOOD), but i am not very good at finding fish....if they are there i do ok, but i am not familiar enough yet with moons, and tides and weather and stuff like that....i would really like to get out on a few trips with some on the sharpies that are around here....i basically go when i feel like fishing, and hope i catch...i see guys out in montauk sitting in their cars, and im the only one fishing, and then it seems as though they all get out and the fish show up....i wish i knew enough to be that good...but anyways i do fish a lot, and i think i have a good technique, so i would say in the top 35-40%....hopefully one of you guys could take a young buck under your wings and teach me a thing or two!

Now i know both sides

At 32, having spent 31 of those years living/fishing in FL, I definately paid my dues as far as learning how to catch the fish there. In FL I would put myself in the top 10% ( higher for snapper/grouper fishing).

Well I went on my first Cod trip here yesterday, lets just say It looks like I am starting all over. At least it was fun. :)

Best Regards,
Sebastian Red
