boat for cod.

At least a 30 footer.Make sure you get a life raft in case you sink. You won't last to long in cold water.
I wish there was cod fishing here off Long Island so I could go out. No party boats are sailing for cod on a regular basis so you can assume the fishing is stinko! The NMFS is doing a terrible job bringing the cod back. When the average joe can go out in the winter and catch himself 8 or 10 cod, then the fishery will be healthy. I don't believe anything the NMFS says about the cod. They are not to be trusted.

well i disagree with everything the guy above me says,,,learn how to fish the ocean and read the weather and a 22ft center console can catch you some pretty big cod out on the stellwagen bank..i fish up here in the gulf of maine and have been since the early eighties..the fishing was great, then bad, but now nmfs strict regs has brought the haddock back, and some very big cod once again can be jigged up on jeffries ledge..it has been closed for a while now,,but you can even catch big cod closer to shore than before i own a 30ft now but i still check the bouy reports read what there saying and use common sense

I'm not sure which "cape" you are speaking of, but here's my .02.

If you want to fish cod 24/7, with the exception of really foul weather - go with the 30 foot lobster boat. With a 22 footer you have to pick your days, and sometimes still will end up calling it off. There is "inshore" cod fishing, places that only require a 10 mile trip or less, but it's not as consistent as getting offshore. A seaworthy 30 footer will give you a much more productive season.

If you work, and only get a couple days off a week, and want to fish cod offshore 10 trips a season, a 22 footer will do you fine. It's just the weather is now going to pick your days. The upside is you have a much faster, cheaper, easier to handle boat, that is good for more than offshore.

My last .02 is, if you are mostly planning on fishing cod, there's no need for a CC. 22 ft center consoles are nice for fighting fish, but are not as seaworthy as something of equivlant size with a closed bow. If you are going to get a boat in the low 20's for primarily "offshore" runs (say about 20 miles), pleanty of people do it, but a closed bow is more suited for the job.

i wasnt advocating a 22ft just trying to make a point that you can fish offshore with a 22ft cc,if you pick your days,,off course a 31 ft jc would be my top choice,,so if you are rich buy it and buy me one two.. couple of more months and we are back in the ocean......leaky rivot you fish the gulf of maine????
