Been reading about them. Mastic one is new to me that makes 4 Islip Lindenhurst Smithtown Mastic. Sure am glad Harley barks at every sound he hears in the middle of the night time to dust off the 12ga for Duck season

I'm seriously thinking of getting a shotgun, I have my pistol permit paperwork on the desk already so it seems almost a no-brainer to get some form of protection before my permit kicks into gear.

How long are you waiting? In Suffolk it took 8 months for me to get a permit.

I have to submit my paperwork and have the interview in Yaphank, I'm a suffolk county resident as well so I know the time frame isn't ideal but it is what it is. At least a shotgun will be less paperwork.

Plus the sound of a 12ga shell being chambered is prolly more intimadating than a pistol

It just seems more real threat now than ever. On top of this last week my wife called me from the doctor's office and told me we're pregnant so I want to keep us all safe.

Anyone recommend any particular 12 gauge shotgun brands/models? Any and all info would be appreciated.

For home protection, nothing beats the Mossberg 500 series 12 gauge.................

Like cany said, there's not a sound more intimidating in the darkness than the sound of that sliding rack..........

Having a gun in the house CAN be a source of protection. But it can also be a threat.

You gotta make a careful choice.

As it was said, the sound of chambering a round into any pump shotgun is enough send anyone running. Pistols are very inaccurate. Even in close quarters. Heart racing, blood pounding, dark, scared, it's hard to aim a small hand gun accurately. It's easier with a long gun. longer sight plane. Wider spread of load. But it's a little slower to manuever, and still, in close quarters, that shot load isn't spreading that far.

I used to keep a loaded shotgun next to my bed. Then, one morning a buddy came over to get me to head out hunting. Even with my dog in the house, he managed to walk in the door, through the kitchen and stand next to my bed (I live in a small 2 room cottage) and tell me to get up. When I woke up and saw a guy in camo, with a hat on that I didn't recognize, I didn't reach for the gun, I jumped up screaming LOL. If Mike was there to do some harm, he could have grabbed the gun, and been an armed intruder, in one easy second. And I would have just given him the gun. . .

I keep them unloaded and in the gun cabinet now.

From my experience it seems that many times these crimes are not random. It often is one of two scenarios, business owner carrying cash or narcotics involved. The times are usually late at night or early morning. When people are most vulnerable.

Be wary of anyone knocking on your door asking to use the phone. Guys, don't be suckered in by a young woman. I've investigated cases where there were 2 guys just out of sight behind her. If you don't know who it is and are not expecting anyone don't answer the door (especially women home alone). Just remember that people aren't always what they seem ( CON-ED, FedEx,Cablevision). If in doubt ask to see ID. The best alarm.....get a dog!!!

With that being said I keep a Sig 226 on my nightstand next to bed, a KAHR K-9 hidden but easily accessible on the first floor, and a S&W .38 hidden in the first floor hallway. The Mrs. knows what to do with the PPK .380 when I'm at work. Keep in mind any gun you have will not be effective unless you practice, practice, practice. I try and hit the range at least once a week.

It's a real shame that one has to think about such things, but better that than becoming a victim.

That sound is enough to send chills down anyone's spine. All you will see after that is butt and elbows. But it stinks that you can't shoot them in the back as they start running. You hope they trip and fall on their way out. Then it's say hello to my little friend. Parasites.
