With all these fish in montauk, all the bait I am seeing on the south shore,do you think the beaches are going to be loaded?
What do you think will happen this fall?Do you think the fish are going to make a nice run down the beach, years past we have not had a decent run of fish down the south shore, but also not as much bait, well if we did I definitely missed the majority of it.
On your observations Al,what do you think is going to happen on the open beaches on the south shore?

JPF Surf,

With the lack of mullet around I am somewhat concerned because we should have already witnessed the first South shore blitz. (mullet run usually starts around the first of Sept.) :(

You see, the past three weeks there were big bodies of bass roaming (Rhode Island & Montauk) but I am sure those schools already made their pass along the deeper water columns and ignored our inlets and shorelines.

However, I am still very optimistic because the fall weather just started to snap (Northern and Eastern winds with cooler temps) and there are big fish still at our Northern regions (Massachusetts, Block Island, Rhodes Island, Connecticut). Fortunately there are lots of bait around (in the bays) and hopefully keep them interested along our suds. :)

Also, since the water temperature still a tad on the warm side… it will prolong our season a bit and with some hopes… those big fish will make their historic migration along our shorelines.

For those other sharpies out there…What are your thoughts?

What a strange year its been

I have noticed less mullet around this year as opposed to last year my self. I fish boat, surf, and everwhere in between. Last year this time and earlier we were landing mullet at the bridges on most drops. This year you land mostly c-bass, although the mullet are around we have caught a lot less, But on the flip side we have caught a lot more c-bass and porgies.

I have also noticed a LOT more P-bunker in the water this year as opposed to years prior. I have noticed bass loading up on them on a few occasions.

I was wondering myself if the mild winter or the warm temp has had an impact. I tend to agree with AL in the fact that the run has began and some have left. My logs show I should be doing better than I am. Spring for us was great, we had more quality fish than ever before. Summer produced pretty well almost above average and I have since noticed a drop off amongst me and friends.

Also look at the snappers I am still seeing 5" and 6" snappers around with few bigger ones. Maybe just Maybe were in for a later run then usual??
