Does anyone know the type of herring in our local waters and what there migration habits might be? I post this question to the board because I have only noticed two places that members have stated that they are catching these fish: Hudson Park and the Magnolia Pier. I was thinking on trying the lower Hudson River from Pier 40 to the Battery and the Lower East River in NYC but the only schooling bait fish I have caught in these areas are bunker and spearing. Knowing that the herring spend time in the Western LI Sound I assume that they make there way into the upper East River. Do these Upper East Side fish ever made the swim Downtown?

I don't know the type of herring and specific migration habits beyond that they arrive when the water gets very cold in December and leave in March sometime. If you caught bunker in those spots it will probably produce some herring as they are a cold water cousin. Lighted piers sticking out in close proximity to deeper water will increase the odds of catching. Action can be had in the day but night is more consistent....and DON'T FALL IN!!! Good luck.

these are blue back herring. boaters have many more options than shore fisherman. i've found that they like many of the same areas as bunker, rich in bait, current, holes, light (at night) , etc. boaters can go and find them relatively easily, from shore you're more limited. the magnolia run can be great at times however, haven't been to hudson park but the reports are good.

Canarsie Pier, West side, under the lights, puts any other spot I've tried to shame. I have seen ethnics fill buckets here!

The 69th St.Pier, in Brooklyn, and the footbridge across Sheepshead Bay have produced, but not as good as Magnolia (for me). After dark and moving water are both crucial, and the more lighting, the better! Shallow NEAR deep is correct.

Dress warm!
