hungry jack---do u have a prefrence?

i read that generally speaking a green grab is the way to go. I understand that. However there are times when Hermit crabs or fiddler crabs will do better. Question 1: In the sheepsed bay area where can u buy either of the two ---seeing as most of the boats only have green. Question 2: last winter I saw a guy at the dock selling a rather large brown--tann color crab. It seemed to have a soft belly and was sold by the dozen. What is that called? When would u use this kind of crab? thanks in advance

L2T, sounds like those crabs the guy was selling were Jonah crabs...the infamous "whiteleggers." Those are an excellent tog bait and probably account for a majority of the true slob whitechins...usually best in deeper waters.

As to hermits, well don't have much experience with them, but guys that do fish them regularly will usually use them as their last choice of bait. Not because they don't work, but the contrary...they work great but the tog will sometimes want nothing to do with other crabs after they've dined on the hermits. I generally use greenies and "whiteleggers" when I can get em.

HERMIT CRABS

AS FAR AS I KNOW, NOBODY SELLS HERMITS. YOUR BEST BET IS TO SET CRAB NETS FOR
CLICOS AND HOPE YOU GET A COUPLE OF HERMITS. ALTHOUGH I FOUND HERMITS ARE THE ABSOLUTE BEST. BUT,YOU ONLY GET ONE SHOT AT HOOKING THE TOG. IF YOU MISS, YOUR HERMIT IS GONE.

I HAVE FOUND THAT THE SECOND BEST ARE JONAH CRABS. THEY ARE ALSO NOT READILY AVAILABLE BUT ARE EASIER TO FIND THEN HERMITS. CALICOS ARE NEXT THEN GREENIES THEN CLAM, FIDDLERS ARE GOOD FOR INSHORE SHALLOW WATER TOGS AS THERE ARE NO FIDDLERS IN DEEP WATER.

DO ANY OF YOU TOGGERS IN THE SHEEPSHEAD BAY AREA NEED A PULLER OR JUST SOMEONE TO BE ANOTHER BODY IN THE BOAT.? iF YOU DO, YOU CAN CONTACT ME @ [email protected] YOU CAN KEEOP ANY FISH. i JUST WANT TO WET A LINE.

THANKS,

RFSEM

Hermit Crabs

Not sure b/c I never fished specifically for 'tog, but I think I remember reading somewhere on this site that Bruckner Petland in the Bronx has hermits for bait. May be worth looking into for all you blackfisherman. Tight lines. BT

Hermits are very tough to come by. There just aren't as many round these days as years ago. Pollution, loss of habitat, etc. - who knows. And you need a lot of them so it's easy to "fish out" so to speak the local population of hermits if you aren't careful (or if a bunch of people regularly collect bait from the same spot).

I'll add another question to the frey: When fishing greens or jonahs do you prefer to take off the shell and legs? Or leave them on?

I used to blackfish with a guy on the north shore. One week he'd say leave the shell and legs on, the next take them off, the next leave the legs on but no shell etc etc. We always did well but he would never say how he knew what to do week by week.

I have found that it depends on what they want on any particular day and the size of the crab and the hook. Match the hatch. But I would try both and see if either one produces better then the other. I have found it really balances out but I like to remove the shell but that's my prefrence.

However, when I use Johans, I leave the shell on and remove all the legs.I bait in from flipper socket and back out through the claw socket. Some people hook it through the face and out the back. Again, it depends on the size of the crab and hook.

For the member who mentioned Bruckner Petland,do you remember if that was the actual name or is it Petland Discount on Brucker Blv.?

Bruckner Petland

LAZYBONES, I think it's the Bruck blvd. petland discounts. I'm pretty sure I read it in the Western Sound report section awhile back. You may want to PM the author to get specifics, or call the store. I think the manager's (or fishing reporter's) name is John.
