We've been catching the shad along the south shore this fall on deadly dicks and crippled herrings. In the spring, we use small Fin-s or diamond jigs with Sabaki rigs.
To rig them for live bait we use a circle hook or treble hook. I hook the fish in the lightly in the back just in front of the dorsal. My father hooks them through the upper lip. Run a three to four foot leader to a five ounce drail and let him down to the bottom. Set the spool drag and clicker. Let the reel for scream a few seconds before engaging the spool.
Your local tackle shop should sell what are called "shad darts". You need to try different colors but once you find the right one for the area/conditions, they are deadly when using a 6lb test outfit!!
