Hello again all. I have recently purchased a 20 ft center console with a 115 4 stroke Yamaha. It has 12 hours on it.

I did not read the manual that came with the engine. I noticed last night that the oil gauge was blinking. After reading the manual, I noticed that Yamaha recommends that the oil be changed after the first 10 hours and every 100 hours thereafter.

So today I went to the boat looking to change the oil. The problem is that the drain bolt is at or near the water line on the engine. This means that the boat needs to be pulled from the water to change the oil. I will not have a trailor available until next Saturday.

I am wondering if I could use some sort of siphon or pump to pull the oil out of the dipstick hole. This would make things very easy for me.

Please let me know if you have any experience with Yamaha 4 strokes and changing oil this way.

Thank You

Anthony

Take a ride to Boaters World on 347 about a mile north of the "Sports Arena" buy the Smith Haven Mall, or there's another in Massapequa (Chek the phone book for any others..) You could probably go to any marine store for this... They sell a pump to remove the oil (never done this myself as I trailer my boat) Hope that helps.

New Boat, New motor...Take it to the dealer and have the recomended service performed. They will want you to do more than just change the oil (ie: new plugs drain and fill the lower unit, and other small adjustments) for the warranty.

Yes they do, I use one all the time to change the oil on my inboard engine. Some units attach to a drill to run the pump but they also sell a ones that have there own motor which you connect to the battery. I have used both and the one with there own motor are well worth the extra money. For this situation I would let the dealer do it.

question for somoan:

CaptainAnt says that he has 12 hours on his new motor. Your advice to have the dealer do the first oil change sounds reasonable. However you suggest the dealer will also want to change the plugs and the oil in the lower unit. Could this possibly be needed for a motor with only 12 hours?
