Codman, I'm from L.I. too. Can't beat the Helen-H for those one day trips. I know the drive is longer than Montauk, but the reward is greater. The Helen-H only allows to board in the order you reserved the trip so if you're down on the list, say around #20, you might not get a seat inside the cabin. That can be a pain. The Viking is more comfortable and convenient for multiple day trips. I've never sailed with the Frances Fleet.
I'm booked on the Helen-H Sat 2/23. They seem to sail if the winds are no higher than 15-20 knots. Once it gets to 20-25 knots, it's iffy.
