Pics from 2 day camping/fishing outing past wk end in Harriman.

8am on Sat morn. bear came down to the lake 4 drink. He moved along shore & everytime I pulled camera out he'd move along again behind some bushes. I finally paddled within 20 yrds @ which point he became aware of me & bolted.

Slept a little less sound night 2. Put food up in bear bag for 1st time in 25 years camping there. Reported sighting to office at Tiorrati Circle, but they expressed no interest. Surprising giving the number of campers on any weekend & the kids soon 2 arrive 4 summer camp. Night 1 I had midnight snack of peperoni stik in my tent. Essshh. Could have ended badly.

Was shut out 1st 4 hrs Sun morn having fished lake perimeter features. Fish had 2 be somewhere. Broke out purple Robo worm & let wind take me across lake while I drop shotted as I recently learned in CA. (see post Drop Shotting Diamond Valley). After getting blanked all morning I began to pluck fish off the bottom non-stop. Bright cloudless skies had them all down deep. Awesome technique.

If you try, I recommend the River2Sea Tungsten Skinny Drop Shot weights from Cabela's as they are compact (thus barely vis) and the thin tube profile means almost no weeds hang up. A little more $, but I didn't snag and lose even 1. Bait was 18" up from sinker. I like the red StandOut brand hooks as I can never get the hooks to stand up right otherwise.

Thanks!

Follow-up to my original post. To be fair to PIP rangers. I just phoned their HQ and a nice woman explained that they're aware that they're aware there's actually a pop. of bears (size unknown) that reside in park. Not just travling thru. Mostly near Stearling/NJ side. As long as they behave, as mine did by running away, they don't care. If they weren't affraid of people, poked in trash, or lingered around camp they would take action. Live and learn. I will always rig a bear bag from now on.

That's actually a pickerel which is the smaller cousin of the pike. Same nasty teeth and aggressive personality. It would be small for a pike, but it's really big for a pickerel. Not sure how big as I didn't measure, but I haven't had one that draped across my lap like that in a while.

FrankieSurf...good to see another surf guy who fishes freshwater as well. Yeah, I should have measured that one.

Regarding the park loaded w/ bear, I dunno, I never heard it. Certainly lot's of rocky crags they could hide in, but I would think there's too many visitors 4 them to be comfortable. It's 50,000 acres, but there's soooo many hikers and campers it's hard to imagine they get any peace. Ranger lady said true to that, but that most people stayed on beaten trail. If you look at a map of the park though, there's not a lot of "unbeaten" trail. It's carved up pretty good.

That's a great count!

You can really score up there if you do it right. I always see the guys lining the causeway of Welch in the middle of the afternoon and feel so bad. Just not the way to collect a load of fish. I wanna pull over and say dude...hit it at dawn, dusk, and/or do yourself and walk around to somewhere that's not getting hammered 24/7.

I'll look for you up there. I plan to leave the kayak on the roof for the next couple weeks and get onto Kanawaukee as many nights as I can after work. 10' blue Old Town Dirigo...although the triple rod holder is probably the big give away. :)
