Well must of the half day PB will give you a discount if you stay and fish again whit them,I think both of them are necessary example if you want to go fishing 1/2 day without telling your wife you can do that without problem and she never will find out all you have to do keep all your gear in your car and sneak your catch to the freeze...

Steamboat...why?

If you can buy a boat at a great price, offer great services, already own a dock with plenty of parking in a good location with little competition it may turn out well.

ps My Friend is a commercial guy with over 40 years experience.

A boat out of Shea would be a hit if the operation's good. He would have PLENTY of business.

At that location day trips should be full day even though I usually prefer 1/2 day with the option of staying on the 2nd trip at a discount.

Night time striped bass trips would be something I'd be especially interested in at that location.

There have been a few boats in that area over the last 10 years. None seem to make out well. The only boats that are doing any good are the Cruise Boats. Please do your homework before going into business, thing are slow on the boat I work on.

Having your own property with parking is a huge +. I still would not recommend it. Just read the threads on this site & you can get a good idea of why. It has been tryed before from that location & didn't work out. If you want to talk to Steve Berlin I'll give you his ph#. He sailed from there for a few years with the Claire. The boat I'm associated with has a similiar situation (own property & parking). If we had to depend on the income from the PB business we would have been out years ago. It's a tough time to get started with the regs, fuel & tackle expenses and lack of business in general. Just look around & you can see that PB's with a long established history are having a tough go of it and many are no longer in existence.

If he does decide to get into business I would go with a 1/2 or 3/4 day boat. People in general don't like to fish all day, only the more experienced fishermen that realize it sometimes takes a full day trip to put a decent catch together do. How many experienced fishermen are left it's mostly a tourist trade during the summer months now. Besides you can collect more money with a shorter trip (2 trips at $35 is better than 1 at$60). I would also suggest 3/4 day. Many of the boats out of the Highlands, NJ do this. They fluke during the day & run what they call magic hour trips in the afternoon for blues & bass. I'm surprised no-one from my area has tryed this. Whatever your friend decides to do I wish him luck.

From a business perspective, I'd favor 3/4 day trips in the morning, 1/2 day in the evening or late afternoon.

Tends to appeal to all types of anglers.

As Steamboat points out, most of the AH fleet in NJ does this and many of these vessels carry well. Same is true for the fleet in Port Jeff. However, Pt. Jeff itself is a day tourist destination and that definitely helps put fares on the boat during the summer season. Not sure if that would work in Queens, but I could definitely see "magic" or "happy hour" trips working out well for people sneaking out of work early who can't do an all night outing.

1/2 day if you cater to tourists....full day if you cater to fisherman.....the 1/2 day tourist fluke boats in Montauk charge almost what a full day NYC area boat does...go out twice (weather and passengers permitting) and have a short run to the RIPS.....

3/4 day is the best bet. Half day usually isn't enough time and a full day will often let you off at the dock just in time to sit in traffic for the ride home. I prefer getting back to the dock at 3 to 3:30 to get a jump on traffic. Nothing worse than doubling your commute time home after a long day of fishing.

If the fuel keeps going up a half day trip will be raised to $40 before the end of Summer

I think that may be the 2008 fare for the half day boats in Montauk.

Actually, right now its $45 for a 1/2 day in Montauk and still worth every penny.

I was down in Florida last month and a 1/2 day is up to $60, and if you visit CA and plan on doing a 1/2 day, figure on at least $70-80 when you factor in licenses and rentals.

Luckily my friend owns multiple properties and businesses...he may see a need for this kind of thing including some fun ammenities that may go with it...depends on whatever permits are required, you have to be multi-dimensional and diverse to servive this economy.

He has a passion for fishing, especially watching the kids go at it

Where your friend wants to start-up he will need a boat to do booze cruises in the evening and such. That's what my mentor did till he got big enough. Fish all day quick clean up and party. he will have to have a DJ handy if needed. I worked charters with the FDNY, NYPD and construction contractors. The old Transit Cops have a yearly cruse, that's a good one I was a paying passenger on a few of them.
