Hi,
Try different degreasing detergents. Try Simple Green.
If nothing works do you have the facilities to chuck the rod in a lathe?
I use the dry wall sanding sheets to shape eva (synthetic) grips. I cut them into 1/2" or 3/4" strips. Just rotate the rod and remove the top layer of dirt etc.
