What's everyone's take on the green water offshore this year. Been fishing offshore of Shinne**** for last 15 years and have never seen it so bad. Seems to stretch all the way to the edge. Threshers don't seem to mind, but the rest of the pelagics (shark & tuna) for the most part stay clear. Any thoughts on why, and is relief in sight....

mild winter

I feel the green water is from our mild winter. The alerge in the bays and in the ocean started very early this year. We had 90 deg days in April and this started a rapid growing of bio mass.
how ever I did notice a lot of sand eels while fishing this year. To me when i see the return of the sand eels I see tuna in the mudhole and inshore grounds. the last season was 89 at the Bacardi. the reason the tuna stayed all year long was because of the sand eels invested in the area. The water clarity is only 1 element for fish. I would rely more on the bait then the clarity for tuna. We all have caught tuna in green water? I think it will pick up in time.

I have also found this green water and at some high temps(76).I have been to the Mud Hole in September and not had temps over 74.It is`nt even August yet.I have heard that the green water stretches out to the Hudson Canyon.I really hope this does`nt hurt the fishing there. The latest news I heard from the Hudson Canyon was`nt good.Hopefully the best is yet to come.

LATELY, AS FAR AS THE SHARKING GOES, HOT SPOTS SUCH AS TH YANKEE, LILLIAN, GLORYHOLE, MONSTER LEDGE AND VICINITY, HAVEN'T HAD MUCH ACTION. I HAVE FISHED ALL OF THESE SPOTS THE PAST 3 WEEKS, WITH ONLY ONE BLUE SHARK TO SHOW FOR IT. SEEMS THAT THE COOL, CLEAR WATER IS EAST, THATS WHY I HAVE CHARTERED A BOAT OUT OF THE HAMPTONS THIS WEEKEND. THE CAPT HAS REPORTED GOOD ACTION 30 MILES SE OF SHINN INLET.

I have heard that if you go to where they are pumping sand for the beach project that some big sharks forage around these areas.I do not know what beaches are being done but if you can find out I would try around there for sharks.

I agree with togmaster

I think the green water is a result of the mild winter. I don't hold out too much hope for it clearing up this season. Oh well, that fishing in the Northeast for you. Same old, same old!
Can't wait for October to get here, so I can head south of the border for some real fishing. Marlin, mahi, wahoo, yellowfin, etc.
Until then, I'll bore myself to death with sharking, and HOPE that the tuna make a solid run in the canyons later this season.

WATER

Well, we're seeing a increase in activity south of Cape Cod, BFT, YFT, Albies, MAHI, White Marlin, Mako.....

Mind you not wide open yet, but incouraging none the less ! I think's things are goin to be really good in Aug.

I think they just moved east and up this year following those early eddy's we had a few weeks back that skidded off to the east edge :)
