What are the odds of a second attack in close proximity of the first? Shark attacks on humans are rare, especially in Southern California. A shark is not a stop eating machine is it? Most of them (from what I learned) eat a small to moderate amount of food each day.

Last line of the article:
?The last shark fatality in the San Diego area may have been in April 1994, when a woman's disfigured body was washed ashore with evidence of shark bites. The most recent death before that was in 1959, local media reported.?

I can?t recall any repeated feeding cycle or a shark attacks on humans other than the Jersey Shore attacks of 1916 that killed four people over a couple of weeks, and even that one it was debated about how many sharks were involved. Then there also was the fictitious movie Jaws that scared the bejesus out of a generation of east and west coast beach goers.

5-15 people are killed each year by sharks out of the millions and millions who bathe, fish, wade, surf or swim in the shark?s natural habitat. The odds of getting killed by a shark are tiny at best. You can even increase your odds of not becoming a shark snack by staying out of the shark?s house. ;)

Me, well I won?t be bothered about worrying about getting eaten by a shark. I figure the odds are in my favor.

Great Whites are territorial. They will steak out an area in which they feed. As long as they have food and the water temperature is good they will stay. If that shark thought that was an area with a food source it will stick around. Would you chance it?

Great whites have been known to patrol the same waters, usually just offshore of seal colonies, for months at a time. The odds rae pretty good that shark is still somewhere in the general area, especially if it is finding food.

Sure why not? (and I have ;))

Crabby and Mike; I realize that great whites will hang around for a long time at plentiful food source that they are familiar with and like. (seals) My question was more in the likes of documented repeated shark attacks against humans. Us humans are not the preferred food of choice for sharks (if we were we would know
) and in many cases when a great white strikes a human it is a case of mistaken identity.

Back in the middle 80?s I was trying to learn how to surf. A friend (who lived out there) was going to help me when I was out in Northern California (Fremont area) for a work related trip. After work each day and on days off I drove to Santa Cruz for fun and surfing lessons
. I was there for about 14 days.

There was a shark attack off ?The Hook? one day and a surfer was bitten and survived a great white attack. He kept all his limbs and extremities but got a bunch of stitches and his board was a goner
.

The following day (off day) we did not go in the water, but hung out in a local bar  . We discussed the possibilities with many locals (they talked I listened) of a repeat attack. The next day the water was full of surfers so we gave it a whirl.

I?m still standing.

But I still can't surf worth a ****

Koz---I think I know what u mean here.
But still, do you wanna risk being the first documented case of a repeat shark attack?
Not me.
That shark may not have been lurking those waters alone.
Bad Company.

Do I want to be the first documented second snack of a shark patrolling and feeding off of humans? I can honestly say NO WAY!

But I can also honestly say that I won?t live my life in fear either and I?ll do what I want to do, within reason of course. ;)
