PLease don't buy anything from there. The sale price is teh normal price EVERYWHERE else. At least from teh few reels I checked (5600C4 Abu & the Shimano Calcutta')

I wonder how many people are fooled into thinking that is a sale?

Since they are in Austrailia, the price wouldn't be in US Dollars, now would it?

You gotta play your cards with Campbell's, watch the dollar. At one point a year + a half ago, the USD was 42 cents to 1 AUD. Now it is at 59 cents to the dollar.

Dave, LOL, the prices shown are in Aussie dollars. For up to the minute exchange rates go to www.xe.com/ucc/ I just did the exchange on that reel you mentioned that was shown at $299 Aussie dollars, converted into U.S. Dollars it was $177.50, not a good deal there I guess. I have purchased Penn International Reels there and saved BIG bucks. I don't know if it is that the exchange rate is not favorable now, or maybe it depends on the reel you want. It is worth checking though.

MM - you are correct, the dollar is so low right now anyhting we buy international is ridiculously priced. How's $19.50 for a crappy cheeseburger and fries sound?

They have sales all the time, gotta check and see what's on sale, and buy from there. At one point, Trinidad's were in teh LOW $200 range, and the TLD 30-II was $240.

Finz,
Give us an idea on how much you want to spend. There's plenty of tackle shopping enthusiasts here. I'm sure we can find the best reel for the money for you.

Campbells

You're right - gotta watch the exchange rate, but Campbells can be great. I got a pair of 2 speed 30Ws for <$400US last year, plus a great price on a Penn 4G. Mark at Charkbait has good prices, but you need hit one of his weekly specials to really save $$. I think a lot of the good International deals were when Penn was changing the 30, 50 and 70 to the new style and clearing out the old stuff.

CAMPBELLS

the prices on big iron are better than around here , but if you look at smaller conv. or spinning they cant compare. Funny how a product made in this country is purchased cheaper half way around the world. OH and over a certain $ amount its free shipping.

IT actually isn't "Cheaper" (although we end up paying less USD) - the exchange rate makes all the difference. They probably buy the reels from Penn & Shimano at teh same price the US dealers do, but when the US economy goes up, or the Austrailian goes down,, the buying power of the USD goes up. I'd like to hear from someone in Austrailia if the prices on reels is as good as we are saying.

Finzup,

To answer your question on an entry
level reel...

Blues, Stripers, Fluke
(Shimano TRG100) good all around reel
at a decent price (about $75.00).
I have caught all of the above species
on that reel with absolutely no problems. I am not a backer of any one particular brand of reel so my opinion
is not bias. I own just about one model of every reel out there. I even caught two brown sharks (both over 70 lbs.) and a baby mako (17 lbs. promptly returned) at 17 Fathoms with the Shimano TRG100.
As for blackfish. My opinion is you need a different reel for that type of fishing. I use several reels for blacks. Newell 229, Daiwa Sealine SH20, Daiwa Sealine 50H, Penn 525GS and when the time is right, I'll test my brand
new Avet.
Look around, do your research and NEVER
buy a reel (or rod) online that you have not had in your hands. That is VERY important.
Good luck...

Thanks for help Savvy

Savvy,

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I have a quick follow-up...

What is the difference between a Shimano TRG100 and a Penn 525GS or a Newell 229/Diawa sh20 or sh 50?

I have two spinner reals right now that I have used for Blues and Fluke...Hopefully thats the right type of reel...I used the same for Blackfish but that was out of ignorance as to what the right thing is to use here.

I would like to keep the cost of the reel to about $100.

Any help would be great...and if you can tell me what the right reel is to use off a boat for fluke/flounder would be great too!
