The issue of fishing with Grass Shrimp just came up on the Bassin with Bellies thread. I have heard (and read in the "other local fishing magazine") that using Grass Shrimp for Bass and especially weakies works great. I think that the method is fairly simple, anchor up along marsh bank, start throwing the shrimp over for chum, and drift four or five shrimp on a live bait hook into the slick with the tide.
First question, Is this the right technique?
Second question, What is the best way to get enough bait to be successfull?
Third Question, What is the best time of the year?
I would assume that outgoing is the best tide.
Good Luck and Tight Lines

Grass shrimp

Grass shrimp are great for weakies. You can get them yourself by pulling a net behind the boat (the net looks like a drift sock)or using a scoop net by scraping pilings, looking in eel grass ect.. During the season some bait shops sell them frozen but the fresh ones work better. You are correct about how to use them.

Using shrimp

Using grass shrimp. Well sometimes grass shrimp are a very good bait and some time s not . I say this because it all depends on if the shrimp are In the area you are fishing. Sometimes the Shrimp are your only choice if no other bait is around! I personally used them for porgies and they work great. I never found the grass shrimp for bass to work well. The grass shrimp seem top attract the smaller schoolie fish and never bothered much with it even if they were the only bait in town. As far as weakies yes they work but not my Preference I think a good old sand worm is the way to go with weakies. I never had Weakies turn down a big fat juicy worm . I also used grass shrimp in the bays for Fluke and had success! Seabass also will eat grass shrimp. So yes the bait will work better on different species. I found using regular window screen against dock pilings to work great to catch the little critters. But don?t forget try them for Lafayette?s and porgies and you?ll see them work well

grass shrimp

they also work great for those ever hard to find winter flounder. when i was a kid my grandfather used them for winter flounder in the moriches bay area off the flats where the tidal creeks drain into the bay. we used a net like the ones used for shiners it was square and we droped it overboard with a can of catfood in it .for weakfish he used whole shrimp or soft shell crabs halved or quarterd and tied to the hook with sewing thread
