I want to install a GPS ant. mount on my hardtop and run the coax. down thru the center of the mounting flange into the electronics box below. Is there anything I should be cautious with. the connector is permanently attached to the cable so the hole I have to drill will be about 1/2in. Thanks

Sea,
There should be a way to remove the end of the cable. Check the instructions. I've installed three of these things now, one garmin, one furuno and one northstar and they all had a removable fitting on the end of the cable.

GPS

With my Garmin I had to heat up the tip of the end with a soddering iron and take the end off. Then you can drill a much smaller hole for just the wire when running it. Use sodder with flux in it so you don't have to play around with the flux seperately. Any electronics store will carry the sodder.

GPS ANTENNA CABLE

I just went through this on my boat installing a Lowrance LCX 16ci. The cable connector was way to big for the thru hull fitting. So I tried to take off the connector. When I took off the connector only half of it came off the other half was glued together.

To make a long story short I wound up cutting the cable and resoldering the wires together. This turned out to be the easyiest way to do it with out drilling a huge hole in the hull.

gps ant. mounting

Thanks for the help guys but I finally got the courage to drill the holes. I installed a Garmin 176c under the electronics box bringing down power from the box and the ant.thru the box. I did not want to mess with the connector since this would be the weak link based on my telco. installation experience. I went to Home Depot and bought a deep 1" hole saw and went down into the box and another 1" hole out the bottom using cable caps. Put marine silicon as required and all looks great. By the way the boat is a 23' Hydra-Sports. Thanks again.
