Not only are they going to map the ocean floor, they are going to provide all data to the public for FREE.

What they are alos going to do is allow users to use the data to create their own maps. Shortly after this information is released to the public, you will begin seeing user-generated maps on Google that show wrecks, drop-offs, canyons, etc...

This is a great thing if you like the spread of information and knowledge and a very bad thing if you think you know of some secret wrecks.

All of the data is already available to the public for free, if you know where to find it. What they are doing, and its would be real accomplishment, Is to make all of the data availabel in one place.

I doubt that it will have enough resolution to help fishermen out very much in the near term. Secret wrecks are secreat because they aren't mapped and don't appear in any database.

Compiling all of the data into one place is a huge accomplishments, agree with you there 1000%.

Secret wrecks aren't on any databases or whatever, but what is stopping someone like me from creating a user-generated map with all of the GPS numbers on it that I have? I understand most fisherman will opt to keep their numbers private, but you can bet there are gonna be those fisherman who prostitute out there GPS numbers in hopes of achieving some other fame.

Maps of surf spots have already started showing up in Googles user-generated contest, including some relatively secretive ones...

Aha, O.K. I misunderstood what you said earlier. I thought you were saying that the maps themselves would be pointing out "unknown" wrecks. I'm sure you're right, there will be some "blabbermouths" disclosing heretofore unknown wrecks.

Navionics makes a bathymetric chip called the "fish n chip". It is free with the purchase of a gold, or higher, Navionics chip. You can check out the details on the Navionics website. Just look under FAQ's. This chip is loaded with information that you cannot get on any other cartography, until I guess now.
