Unless you owned a farm, ranch, fishing or other business that really needed it...

Driving an H1 or H2 was a testament to the driver's stupidity. I can't think of a more dramatic way to tell the world, "Look at me, I'm an idiot who wastes money!"

What about a $100,000 watch? Or a $1,200 bottle of Champagne? You could make a much better argument to the logic of buying a bigger, heartier vehicle then buying a $1,200 bottle of champagne.

The reality is, that in a FREE SOCIETY, if you have the $$$ and want to show people how "stupid" you are, you can. The problem is we are headed for a society where you won't be able to, unless you pay Al Gore for the carbon credits.

Do a search on the THT web site. It was a few years ago but I was shocked at the number of fisherman/boat owners who were in love with their Rolex watches, and defended with vigor their reasons for spending all that money. Granted Rolex watches cost less than GM-Hummers, but it is the same principle.

In this case it's more a troubled car manufacturer that isn't willing to produce a loss leader for the few people that might want to buy it. I'll bet the U.S. military will still want to purchase H1's though.

Civilians can still buy a Range Rover or Land Cruiser if they'd like, they are just as ostentatious.

My comment wasn't directed at GM's decision to stop making the hummer, but rather the comment that followed about people only doing it to show their stupidity. So far, you are still allowed to be "stupid" (luckily for some). Don't forget many vehicles already get hit with a "gas-guzzler tax".

The senate is looking at new Global Warming laws that will raise trillions of dollars. Where do you think that money will come from?

I hear what you are saying Roccus7 but the same thing could be said for pleasure boat operators.

I'm really going to get in trouble now, but...

IMHO, in the case of cigarette style boats like Donzis and others, I'd lump them right up there with Hummers unless the owners were professional boat racers or need speed to help illegal activities... ;) ;) ;)

I'm from "the right tool for the right job" school of thought. Got a ranch in Montana? A H1 is an appropriate part of the ranch equipment. Got to run to Fortunoffs to buy jewlery? I don't think a H1 is necessary for that, unless you want to get an amored version to protect yourself from hijacking because of the jewlery...

Oh, BTW, I love my Rolex which was handed down to me from my Grandfather... Like to see a H1 attain "heirloom" status!

If we start looking at things based upon whether or not "you really need it", who gets to make those decisions?

Allot of people see the Patriot Act as an infrigement on our rights and the top of a slippery slope. I have less problem with that act, because so much of the things people worry about are covered in the constitution, so even IF the Govt oversteps it's bounds, we the people have recourse in the courts.

I do NOT see the same protections when it comes to the legislation looming on the horizon as it comes to the war on "Global Warming". Obama has already talked about legislating where you keep your thermostats (talk about getting inside your homes), and the Europeans are exploring "carbon rationing" with cards. You think the environmentalists have us by the cahoots now, what if they lobby for a $3/gallon "global warming tax" on marine fuel for "recreational" boaters?? Why not? After all "It's for the good of the Planet". Right?

No self respecting rancher in Montana would ever own a Hummer. It isn't good tool for anything excpet showing off your money. I too love my Rolex!

So the govt can have them, but why does any private citizen "need" to have them? Racing is not a "need", it is a luxury, and someone out there thinks it is a total waste.

But do you NEED the ranch in the first place? Are you a rancher providing food? If not, you are being excessive in the first place as you do not "need" such a large expanse of property. The people will be better served by the government installing a windfarm on your property, so get ready for the eminent domain notices to show up. If so, then Fine, but the Government has decided that some other truck is more efficient than a Hummer anyway, so you still can't but one.

Don't forget to make sure you give it to your kid before you die. If they don't extend the current tax cuts, and you die after 2010, the govt may just take that as part of their "cut" of your estate (tax).

I know this thread was started about GM's decision to stop making Hummers, but let us not forget that a major reason the price of oil and gas are skyrocketing is because our GOVERNMENT is continuing to refuse to let us use more of our own natural resources. These are the same people debating this week on what kind of changes we need to make to our lifestyles to help combat "global warming". They used the commerce clause in the constitution to stick their nose EVERYWHERE, and now they are going to use Global Warming to try and legislate EVERYTHING. Just watch!

And the vehicles with the highest profit margins sold by the U.S. automakers.
With the price of gas they must be scrambling now...

let's discuss the actual vehicle

The ex-military Hummer definitely had the 'wow' factor when it first hit the streets, but was highly impractical (diesel powerplant, 16" ground clearance, weapon-mounting station between the seats)

The H2 shamelessly pandered to people who wanted to look 'tough' while riding on the comfort of a Tahoe frame. It's a nice quiet gasser engine with gussified interior. The coachwork is largely composed of plastic:rolleyes:
