THinking of trying to use this blank for popping tuna. My friend uses the blank for throwing tarpon poppers, tuna poppers, and some jigging. He loves the rod. I fished it once and liked it. Its light, has nice bend, and seems to have good power. He caught a 60lb BFT and it took the challenge, but my thoughts are it might not handle up to 100lbs. Its the Obsidian Model.

Here the specs
length line tip butt
MU946 (Blend) Obsidian 7'10" 30 - 60 8.0 0.866 Fast Mag-Heavy 26667-01 $160.00

Any thoughts?

MU946- musky blank

I have one spiral wrapped as a conventional with cork tape and fuji seat. I've used for about 4 years. It has probably caught around 40 to 50 tuna. Largest was a bluefin around 130-140 on the Doris Mae 2 years ago. I've caught may 50 to 75 lb fish with it. I also use it for ocean bottom fishing.

The blank alone weighs 6.6 oz.

The first season I was worried about breaking the rod. After a season, I no longer babied the rod and it has held up well.
The rod is fast tapered casts up to 2- 8oz jigs well. Less than 2 oz , the rod does not load up well. For spinning and overhead casting , the rod may may be able to cast lighter lures well. For me, the rod tolerates 15-18lbs of drag well . Eventhough I use the rail a lot on tuna, I do not use more drag than this. I worry about pulling hooks while fighting the fish.

Good luck. I live in shore shore long island. Shoot me a pm if you want to see it .
