Gill Net Regs.......

Seems like a tough question...just made 10 plus call to the NYS DEC, the man I need to speak to, Byron Young, is away from his desk. When he returns I am first on his list. Apparently he is the keeper on that info.

A. Webber just rang me back from NYS DEC. According to Ms. Webber recreational gill netting of any kind is prohibitted on LI. Commercial Fisherman may use a net in some areas, also highly regulated, only for manhaden and mullet, not tablefare.
Rec. fisherman may use a beach seine (30' x4') or a cast net not exceeding 20' diameter for specific species.
So you know: west of Wantaugh Parkway even commercial guys are prohibitted from using the net.

Seem to rember section in the rec. lobster regs. I have not renewed my license since die off in sound so I don't have the regs. Anyone Know? I have used gill nets in NC to get "pogies" for live bait king mackeral. They work . Get a cast net and practice. You need 1 1/2 pound of lead per foot for bunker.
Tight lines, Jim
