Would anyone know if it's a hassle to get to Moriches Bay from the Peconic via the Shinne**** Canal? I'm looking at the charts and it seems to be not TOO bad as long as you stick to the channel. We are keeping our boat out on the East End for the first time, in the Peconic Bay area, and so everything is new to me. Thanks for any input.

If you are making that trip just to move the boat, I would pick a busty weekend at a time when you have mostly high water as you venture past the Quogue canal and into Moriches Bay. The channel is deep in most parts, and on a real busy weekend there should be enough locals traveling along the channel. Find a vessel that is larger than yours and heading in the same direction and follow it (as long as they appear to be cruising with confidence).

Thanks Doctorfish, I wanted to know because I'd like to be able to do a little fishing in GSB, maybe go to Fire Ilsand, and my husband and kids wanted to look for sea horses. :)
BTW, I sent you a message regarding sea horses, but I don't know if you received it, or whether you can respond to me via email, but if you have any information on where we could find the sea horses that would be great. We maintain two tropical tanks - one is dedicated strictly to sea horses - and we would like to see the local variety of sea horses here.
My email address is [email protected]
Thanks for your help:)

I run from moriches to shinne**** very often. It is a very straight forward vourney with well marked channels all the way through the quougue canal as well as into and through moriches bay. The only down side is the speed limit through the canal, but it is a fairly nice ride ( and a great place to let the kids "drive" the boat :) ).

The only place you need to watch is right around the coast gaurd station in moriches as the channel is constantly remarked and may not match the bouy markings on your chart, but other than that it really is an easy jaunt through the entire bay.

The channel from the the shinne**** canal though shinne**** bay up to the bridges is also a very simple ride and well marked. The only "hairy" spot there is at the first bridge that gets you into the west end of shinne**** bay. Not from a navigational stand, but a boat traffic point. But as usual common sense prevails and it really is an enjoyable trek to take.

Best of luck and have fun........Sparky

Thanks LI Sparky. I ran down to Shinne**** bay over the weekend, through the canal, from the Peconic Bay, but did not venture past the Ponquogue Bridge. It was a nice little run. Maybe this weekend we'll venture past the Bridge toward the Quogue Canal. It looks like a very narrow little canal. Also, I can see by the charts that Moriches gets real shallow as you continue to head west toward Fire Island, over by the Coast Guard station, as you mentioned in your post. I imagine that the best time to get in and out of there must be as close to high tide as possible?

Is there any decent fishing in the Shinne**** Bay at all? I didn't see anyone fishing....

moriches bay

I run Moriches and FI inlet frequently and just stay on the bouys if you are on a large boat. Like DR fish stated on the weekend there is a lot of boat traffic but me personnaly would not follow someone unless you know them and they have taken the route before.

As far as fishing in Tiana bay which is west of Ponquoge bridge I don't know how well they do there. I have fished there in the fall for bass just west of the bridge and did well with live ells.
