Where is the place to do a Georges Cod Trip the Helen H out of Hyanns or the Fances Fleet out of Rhode Island.I see the Helen does a trip every day at 4am, the Frances does weekend trips leaving at 10pm returning at 10 pm the next day, is it that long of a ride from Rhose Island or I am missing something?I would prefer to baitfish rather than jigging

Thanks and happy New year

I recommend both boats. You will catch fish on both. However, I much prefer the shorter trip on the Helen H. Most times you are fishing in a few hours. The boat is fast and it sails from a port much closer to the prime fishing grounds. I like the Frances Fleet as well but the travel time to the grounds takes forever. If you don't mind spending twenty-four hours on a boat, you might also want to try the Yankee Fleet out of Cape Ann, MA. The Cashes Ledge trips are super and often times you will catch a good mix of wolffish with the cod and pollock. Also, that boat sails all summer where the other two you asked about stop making the runs during July, August and September. Why not take a trip on each?

The best trips on the Helen H are the Limited Wreck Trips and Limited Wreck Hunt Trips. They limit it to like 25 guys or something, and they fish wrecks with bait and jigs and catch some really big cod. The Georges cod are usually much smaller.

Both the Helen H and the Frances have the same fishing. The ride out to the fishing grounds on the "H" is much shorter, but the drive from the NYC Metro area is much longer, so it's a trade off. I like the Frances because there's no need for me to spend money on a hotel as the ride out takes 7 hours and I just sleep on the way out. When I go up to Cape, I end up getting there the night before and staying in a hotel. George's Banks is almost all jigging, so if you want to bait fish, go on a wreck trip as wreckin ball stated--I have not done one yet, but I'm scheduled for a wreck trip this spring...

The trip from NY ( Huntington area) to Hyannis is about 5 hours. I have done it 4 hours 20 minutes but thats when the car had wings on it. The Wreck trips usually have bigger fish in the 15 to 25 pd category with occasional brutes up to 50. The boat has never anchored on any trip I have been on. I prefer bait fishing but on 90% of the trips I have taken, jigs far outfished bait, even over the wrecks. Cpt. Joe gets you right over the fish so when he blows the horn to drop your lines.....DONT DELAY. It's a long way down and the boat moves fast because of the currents and the wind. If you dont get down ASAP you may miss your shot at that spot. IF its a big piece or the drift is slow, you may nail fish right away and have time to get down to the bottom for a second fish. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for the info, the drive for me to the Cape is probably shorter. i would rather drive in the car than spend 7 hours on a boat ride. I always liked the helen, I used to do a lot fishing with them when they were in Sheepshead. I think I will look at one of the Wreck trips, for one trip a year I like the shot at bigger fish
