Hi Capt. Neil,
I've got a Helen-H trip booked for feb. and was wondering if my lami BL-7030C would be suitable for using as a bait rod. It seems to handle a 16 oz. sinker fine, but it's only rated for 15-30# line and I was going to use 50# power pro. Thanks for the help.

Hi,

Not an expert builder by far and only built a few cod rods but it sounds a little light to me. Can it handle heavier sinkers (you never know). Does 1/2 the rod flex just getting the 20oz sinker unstuck from the mud in 300'? If it does it is probably too light. Also, consider 65lb power pro. Has just a little more beef to it and will be a lot easier to handle.

What reel will you use?(just curious)

Those who are familiar with this blank will have better comments.

Hi,

The Lamiglas BL 7030 is a fine fishing tool especially ocean fluking up to 12 oz or so. I would not use it for cod fishing. You need a strong rod.

If you need a cod rod I have at least 3 demo rods you can choose from that will handle deep water and 20 oz lead plus with no problem. Just call for a time to pick one up.All you have to do is bring it back in the same condition.

Thanks Capt. Neil, I will give you a ring. My Lami seems pretty strong (it can definetly handle 20 oz. of lead) but with it only being rated to 30# line, I'm going to keep it on the rack for this trip. I want a rod that'll give me some lifting power should I be lucky enough to have 2 20 pound cod on the business end. I don't want to be one of those guys who can't cut it and has the mate reel them in!

Capt. Marc, thanks for the help. I was planning on using a 2-speed abu, but ECNM told me it doesn't have the guts to take this kind of fishing, so I'll probably end up using one of my buddies pro-gear or newells. I still think I'll stick with the 50# power-pro as I feel 65 is over kill and I really feel that the thinner line works to your advantage.

Quicknet,

Good advice going with another reel. I started using 50 for cod and found that any weakness in the line would cause a lost fish since it is so thin. I went to 65 and found it just right. i tried 80 and it is ok under certain nice conditions. I am fishing mostly for cod on my own boat so I am always drifting which is easier with thicker lines. On a partyboat, thin is good as long as the clutz next to you doesn't tangle and the mates usually start slicing.

Good luck and let us know how you did.

Capt. Marc

PS it is real cold up her in NH. you guys from NY should come up in July and try fishing for cod in a T shirt.
