I have a Bucara BR 864C and the first time I used it live lining herring in the Deleware River for stripers, I set the hook on a run off and the rod exploded in three pieces. They replaced it but it cost me 30.00 to ship the broken rod back and another 20.00 to ship the new one. They are nice looking rods but on my model, when you do a static line test, the line makes contact with the blank. This is why I think the other one broke......Thanks, Greg.

I was thinking about having you build me a Loomis Rich. I think Fisherguy just changed my mind.

Three pieces it broke into? That is kinda cool. I only broke one rod in my life but I have seen many break. NEVER into THREE pieces!

Think I'll stick to Calstar....Whaddaya think Rich?

Savvy :
I think it clear I'm no fan of loomis..Three pieces does show the quality of graphite used in there rods..( low quality )
The sad thing is for a few more dollars you can own a custom ..But if you add in the $50 it cost him to get a new rod.. Well he's now at a custom rod level..

Hi,

Quality of the graphite that Loomis uses??? I don't know about that. I think it would take the design engrs to answer that.

I think the Loomis product is for special anglers and not for gorillas. They are finesse blanks, very sensitive and very light in weight. What more can you ask for. Yes, they will break easy if abused. So will graphite generation 6,7 and 8. But a finesse angler will take care of them and catch more fish.

Some anglers should be given solid fiberglas rods.

I think the gorillas are in their corporate boats buying fuel with all teh money they saved from not using the proper number of guides, lol.

I have caught bass to 35lbs..King Mack's ,Cobia , Redfish .Mahi Mahi & Blackfin tuna on 100% graphite rods without any problems..Some of the rods were St Croix, Gusa & Shikari.. If a rod cant handle the fish what good is it..
The best was a 48lb redfish on a St croix & a 52 lb cobia on a Shikari..Good quality rods shine in tough conditions & others break in three pieces

Fisherguy its wasnt you ..

Hey, someone asked for an opinion and I gave my honest one. I've been fishing for 45 years. So I didn't start yesterday. Beat up on me if you want. I'm just trying to save someone some grief and money. For the money a custom is the way to go.

Fisherguy,

No one is beating up on you. As you expressed your opinion so are the other posters.

Many anglers love their Loomis fishing rods. They break them today and come back tomorrow with a brand new one, insurance policy. Why??? Because they like how they handle and catch fish. Not necessarily my way BUT to each their own. I have seen these rods break on a pb while blackfishing. They overextend the line pound test and lock down the drag. Once again not my way but they catch a lot of fish. Oh yeah, add high sticking to that.

A few years back in a rod building mag this was Gary Loomis's response to a question, " Would you rather have a rod/blank with 10% more sensitivity or 10% more durability." That says it all! His product was designed with more sensitivity in mind. That is what his customers are accustomed to and expect. I stopped building on Loomis blanks after reading that statement. A business choice.

Every rod/blank manufacturer has a mind set regarding the product he wants to sell. Each targets a range of anglers. As an angler we have a great many good products to choose from, maybe it can be said too many. If a company's product does not work for me that is no reason to pan it. If a company puts an inferior product on the market they will not stay in buisiness.

Oh, and by the way, CUSTOM RODS do break!!! I have witnessed what a few customers have done with customs they asked me to build. These guys are gorillas! They are determined that they can lift the wreck etc. off the bottom. They lock the drag down and high stick with all their might. The hoop strength of the blank is so distorted that the graphite weave is shredded to pieces and the one piece rod is now a 3 piece rod. That is after you hear the rifle shot. Usually the hand up the rod is already swollen. A real finess angler!

I'm not sure what category I fit into...Finesse Angler or Gorilla Angler. I know I have never used a Loomis rod for any extended period of time but have heard good things about them. As Neil described, they are very sensitive. Some guys are not made for the rods they make (or buy). You should do your homework and buy/build blanks that are suited to the "type" of angler you are. Sounds to me like "Gorilla Anglers" should probably stay away from Loomis rods!

To me, nothing beats a Calstar. I have used many, many rods but I always go back to my Calstars. To each his own I guess. Whatever makes you happy, you should stick with. Nobody can tell you what feels best to you. I've learned that building (or having them built like me) custom rods is a process of elimination. I find it difficult to pick up a blank and determine how it will feel when it's cut and built. Many times, I get it wrong and have to do it again. That's why my rod builder LOVES ME SO MUCH!!!

Right Rich?

The rod you are currently building me (a Calstar-what a surprise) will be primarily for live baiting BIG fluke. However, I do love the action for bucktailing and that is why I took that inch off the tip. I don't have a "red" reel but I do have a "maroonish" colored reel.

I will be financing this new rod & it's eventual reel by selling off some of my other reels. I have an Abu Garcia Trophy reel in mind for that rod....It's gonna be sweet!!

Savvy you know how much I like calstar ..For the type of fishing we do here its one of the finest blanks made..Light, sensitive & strong..What about the XLH I made for Vinny, Frank & you..
But I'm glad your looking at the Gusa for what your doing with it I think its on the money..
Its funny how you said winter project I get a call yesterday from a happy angler to tell me how much he loves his 4 new calstar & how he wants to build more over the winter..Looks like a busy winter..
