Hi guys,

I've been tossing around the idea of getting a yak for a couple of years. Maybe this forum finally motivated me. I can't make the Little Neck demo on the 13th. Do you guys have demo days frequently? Also, are any out in western Suffolk?

I fully understand the advantages of a sot, but how many of you prefer a sit in? I'd be using it almost year round, like to travel some distance at speed, and have good balance. (no, I don't know the eskimo roll.) I'd also do some camping up in Maine with it. (Ocean) Maybe some diving along with the fishing. Mostly fishing and paddling for the **** of it. I can only get one kayak! (...at least to start :) Any advice/comments appreciated.

Thanks,
...mocean

IMHO the best kayak to do everything you mention is the Tarpon. It handles very nicely, has tons of storage for camping, is a SOT and is the fastest SOT that fishes well.

As to cold weather you dress for it. I hear it all the time about cold weather and wanting a SIK. SIKS are much more limiting as a fishing vessel. There are a lot of things you can't do with them. Its like fly fishing with only a floating line. sure you'll catch fish but you're missing a lot of places where fish live. Same thing with a SIK. You can't hop off or rather out of a SIK in 3' feet of water on a sandbar and fish newly formed rips with a SIK. we did with our SOTs up at Cape Cod and got fish. There were a lot of things we did that SIKs couldn;t do and we caught fish because of it.

I can't say whether we would have a demo day in western suffolk. LNB is not that far from you and certainly well within an hours drive. Sorry you can't make it Saturday.

We're trying to cover the area. We need to do northern NJ and a CT day. There are only so many that we can schedule.
