Hi Joe,

Sorry but I have not seen nor used these guides. We will need help from the troops. How about it??

I have used # 20 rings as stripper guides BUT I use a Hi Frame guide. This is usually with a smaller diameter reel spool.

Hi Capt.
I spoke to the guys at merrick & they said the stripper is a high frame 20 the 16 is mid frame & the 12,10,8 are ultra low. These are sic rings on titanium frames. A six guide set plus top are supposed to lighter then one stainless frame 40mm.. I've been wanting to build myself a lami s-glass smb1083 for a while. So this is gonna be our test rod. I just hope that with the "ultra" low rings line slap isn't a problem. I hopefully will have a chance to build it before turkey day.
I'll let you know how I made out.

Hi Joe,

Sounds like the making of a great rod.

I am interested in knowing how those guides hold up. Will you have to mortgage the house to pay for the guides???

When I locate the guides I static deflect with the blank bent in the back cast position, then when I turn the blank 180 degrees, normal position, I get a nice smooth line transition. Then I go to the local football field, test cast a 1 oz sinker, easy casts, and set striper guide till I am satisfied, no bunching into stripper guide or line slap.

I wrote the last paragraph as general info for those reading this post. Maybe someone has not set up a set of surf guides for spin reel fishing.

Hi Capt.

In stainless the price is the same as regular sic guides, I'm waiting for a price for the titanium... Limited supply of titanium in the US right now so they don't have a price listed yet.I hope this is going to be a good rod !
I'm not one to stray from conventional wisdom, I like to stick with what I know works. BUT If you don't try then you'll never know. I'd just hate to waste a good blank.
