hi,
i had this problem twice..both times were after i gassed up using several 5 gallon gas cans.

first time my friend checked the gas cap and their was a piece of o'ring missing...we tightened the gas tank cap real hard with the tool used to do that...that did the trick the bulk got hard.

second time tightening the gas cap did not work. i bought a new o'ring and have had no problems since.

my mechanic seems to think the o'ring/gas cap would not cause this...he thinks it could be the squeeze bulb.

good luck

They have a limited lifespan and are inexpensive enough to change it out every few years. They break down/break apart and cause problems.
I just changed mine last fall. Old one failed and it wasn't that old.2004....

Firm?

I've never even thought anything of it. I usually give it about 7 or 8 squeezes, most of the time it becomes firm but occasionally it doesn't. I've never given it a second thought, and I've been fine so far. Is this something you guys think I should look into??

Yeah primer bulbs go after a while, they have a one way valve in them that eventually breaks. They are cheap. Also it's agood idea to try and install it in a vertical position, as it helps the one way check valve work better.

If it's not getting hard, and it always should, then it could either be the bulb itself or other fuel system issues, like as was mentioned about a filter problem or fuel pump problem, but more than likely it's a carb issue.

First thing I would do is replace the bulb and see if it is the problem, if it still doesn't get hard you could have a carburator needle not seating, meaning it is stuck open and flooding one of the carbs, that would be my first look if the bulb is not the problem.
