Tony, I heard rumors they were going to have it again next year, they got a set, I’ll say that much. They are a very unprofessional club, and it is reflected in the way they run that tournament.

I too have fished it for many, many years, and as you know I came in the money last year, and we have fished it together a few times with "The Legend" and Capthookem, and we came in on the money too, I think we took 5th. one year with that 161 Mako I had.

I have a lot of good memories from past tournaments, despite the way they run it, but last year, they left a real bad taste in my mouth. I remember when the guy was making out my check, I said to him, “I think you guys should have postponed the trip and ran it Sunday”, the weather day, his answer to me was, “Speak to your accountant about it.” I had heard the MAYDAY from the Elini earlier that day, it was short and brief, and heard nothing else about it until late the following day, but I would bet that guy knew the Coast Guard had a full scale S&R on at the time.

I have gone on record, on this board, saying that I would never fish that tournament again, but, it is tempting, I would love to take 1st. in that one, and then tell them all where to go from up on the podium, yeah, I know, keep dreaming.

Richie runs a better tournament, and I like his $$$$$ thing better too. :)

Merry Christmas,

I saw this coming many many years ago . After they sent 300 + boats out in lousy and one guy came back with the winning fish by 11am . The fish looked like It was dead for a week and had rope marks that spun around his tail half way up the fish .
There was no way that guy and one other on a 25' boat ran out at 6am in real sloppy conditions setup caught the shark and got back by 11am ..
Many questioned the condition of the fish . Which by the way they let win the tourny .
Many boats didn't even run out that day it was so bad .
It seemed like they had a real problem with using the rain date . That was the last time I entered . I also was always in it .

Be careful what you wish for.....

Indeed everyone has discussed this topic in length, but keep in mind if every club decided the risk of running a tournament was too high from a liability standpoint there would be none to enter, none to have memories from, none from which to spend some time with sons and friends.

If you don?t like the way it is run, then don?t enter, but stop yourselves from the BS of boycott it sounds more like grade school ramblings?..

I?m in!

Hudson Anglers

I do not want to stir up the debate on how the 2002 event was handled but there are other events that run at the same time that the local shark fisherman might consider. I think alot of people have forgoten about that sad day.

regardless of what happen last year the capitan of the vessel should use his judjment as to sail or notI fish in offshore tornys every year with the same crew and if the capt says we dont sail we dont. its only money which is the root to all evil. if the fisherman with the exp. dont fish there is allways some young gun to fill his spot regardless of what you or i feel about the club their is stillalot of young kids with dads wallet that will risk it all for the cash

No one has forgotten

I think you're assuming a lot, no one has forgotten(nor need reminding - thank you) that tragic event and if anything gave a wake-up call to tournament fisherman to be more safety equipted.

Good luck fishing "other" tournaments, remember Star Island has switched to a three day tournament, fish any two. Obviously you will be required to anti up another nights dockage..... Whether to fish/go or not, IT WILL BE UP TO THE CAPTAIN.

Here are the choices boys and they are the same weekend:

Star Island - Montauk
Hudson Anglers - Freeport
South Jersey - Cape May

Good luck! After winning the FHA two years ago, will probably try SI or SJ.

I gave up the fishing in the tournaments, it just was not enjoyable. I enjoy going out on the same days and listen to everyone lieing about what they caught and the spots where they fish but the rushing out and in to the weigh station took the fun out of it for me. I wish all of you that still compete the best of luck and please stay safe and get home to your loved ones.

FHA

I will start by admitting i know nothing about the FHA besides what occured last spring with the Eleni, I have participated in the star island tourney for the past 10 years and have never had so much fun. Star Islands new for this year 3 day option is great and reflects the success of many Marlin tournaments held yearly down south, some of these tourneys offer a total purse that may exceed a half million dollars, Star Islands tourney last year had a hair over a half mil total and with the tournament growing every year im sure it will be well over 500k this coming june, 3 days, you pick the 2 you want to fish, i can only imagine the gutwrenching suspense for those who weigh fish in on day 1, give it a whirl this year its a blast! It may be the largest shark toruney on earth???? anyone know differently?

Hudson Angler 2003

I have fished the Hudson Angler Shark Tournament from 1978 to 2001. During those years my crew and I placed twice in receiving awards. The tournament has always been a hallmark event in the start of the offshore season for the angler who fish the Freeport Area. This, however has been change by the tragic events of the 2002 tournament.
During the week which precided the tournamment the weather blew steady out of the east with no signs of letting up. I instructed my crew that we would make our decision in the morning.
On Saturday the decision was apparent, and I told my crew "Not Today Boys".
My biggest complaint about the tournament was why have a weather date if you are not going to use it. The weather couldn't have been worse.
I am not sure what my plans are for the 2003 tournament. I will
probably call that shot at an opportune time.
To the families and crew of the Elini, my thoughts and prayers are with you for closure in your lifes. In attending the wakes of fishermen I have never met, it was apparent from talking to the families that they were good people just looking to have fun and chase the elusive Mako.

BOYCOTT FHA 2003 SHARK TOURNAMENT

TO ALL

THE SAME IRRESPONSIBLE PEOPLE ARE RUNNING IT ON THE SAME WEEK-END (FATHER'S DAY). NO REGARD FOR THE SAFETY OF PARTICIPANTS WERE EVER CONSIDERED. FOUR DAYS AFTER THAT TRAGIC DAY THE PRESIDENT OF THE FHA WAS QUOTED IN THE FREEPORT READER, ON THE FRONT PAGE STATING "THE TOURNAMENT WAS A HUGE SUCCESS".......IN MEMEORY OF THE "ELENI CREW", PLEASE DON'T ENTER!!

ONE WHO WILL NEVER FORGET........
