Fred...personal opinion, I don't think you need that line for a 5wt, nor do you need to spend that much money. The big claim for the "Sharkskin" line is a new process that allows the line to overcome drag better than other lines and, as a result, cast farther. I think a lot of the marketing hype these days among line manufacturers is to give the impression that if you buy their lines you will automatically cast farther! Unless your 5-weight fishing requires double hauls and extra long casts, which I doubt if you are using it primarily for local trout fishing, then I think those features may be over-kill. They also claim that there is less pick-up drag since the line floats higher on the water than other lines. I think there is a limit to how much incremental value you get from that considering that other lines float high as well. I find their older AST-process lines cast very well and hold up well. There are a lot of really nice 5 weight lines on the market now for almost half the price so unless you really need the distance, I'd check those out. SFG

No Need to spend all that much money

I don't believe there is any need to spend all that much money on fly line. Any good fly line in the $50 to $60 range will work just fine. Another thing to consider; I don't believe distance is an importent criteria when using a #5 wt. Good presentation is far more importent.

Good decision. Too many fishermen fall prey to manufacturers' siren song claim that thier product will make you cast farther. You can't really blame them though as this marketing gimmick has proved very successful. There are two reasons for this as I see it. Number one...many people are more willing to spend what amounts to a good deal of money on high end equipment that they believe will help them cast better when, in reality, what they really need to do is spend some of that money on a few casting lessons and number two...there is a kernel of truth to it. The best marketing ideas always have a kernel of truth to them. Quality equipment is a worthwhile investment. It should be used to enhance the skills we acquire through practice though, not in an attempt to replace them.

Azaiter, I am not saying any of this because I think that this applies to you...I'm just rantin:)

I've casted the Sharkskin, and while I don't believe its worth $100, the line is pretty amazing. It shoots NOTICEABLY better then any other line I've casted. I tried it on a 9 weight and was throwing full lines with limited effort. One big problem, for me at least, is the sound it makes as you cast or strip it through the guides. It is actually loud.

For the most part, fly lines are fly lines is fly lines. Best advice I can give is to clean your fly line regularly. Youll get an extra season out of it.

As for the 5 weight, distance certainly can be necessary. The 5 weight can be used on the Big D, the Esopus, Willowemoc, and all those other rivers up there. However, I do agree that distance should not be a major concern locally.
