jmo, but not always. if you want a full topwater action, yes. but sometimes you can fish a popper with a sinking line to get it to dive under and slowly rise to the top; it can pull some tight-mouthed fish up when other flies fail.

You'd be better off with an intermediate line fishing poppers. If there's any sort of surface disturbance, ie. current or surf, a floating line will get bounced around. An intermediate will cut below all that. Just as crag said, it'll pull your fly under and make it look wounded. Works well

In general, during calm days and if I want the popper (or slider) to be on the surface for maximum "pops" at all times… A floating line is ideal!

On the other hand, like stated above… if you want to work it slightly underwater with an occasional pop… a slight longer tippet with an intermediate line is key!

However, I never use a sinking line (or tip) with a pooper…. Because it sinks too fast and kills the action.
