I plan on fluking aboard the Rosie in Moriches Bay tossing bucktails and would like to build a spinning rod to do so. What blank do guys recommend? This will be the first spinnig rod I've built so any help on which guides to use would be greatly appreciated. I'm a fan of EVA grips (foolproof installation)and I'm familiar the process used to determine guide location. Thanks for all or any replies.

The GUSA 703DHX is the perfect blank for this type of fishing. Fast action to work teh jig, with teh rod flexing right in front of the handle when a big fish is on. It's fishign a lightweight graphite rod, with a graphite tip action, and glass power action. Braided line with no stretch work especially well since hte rod is not too stiff.

If you prefer a slower action, the SW70LM is what you want. THis has a parabolic action which some people really like for jigging FLuke - persoanlly I do not.

Both of these blanks work with 1/2 up to 3 - 4oz. I've got the 703 in stock in Grey, Matte, Red, Cobalt,Green, Purple and even Pink. If 7' is too long, I have the same blank in 6'6 (603) in Grey & Matte

Billy you saw the SW70MH I built as a spinning rod( he loved it)..I use that same blank for fluke..We were out yesterday fishing 60' with 6oz that blank was great (I cut 3" off the tip).. I cant tell you how many people want GUSA now that they see them & fish them...

Rich, the action on the 76MH uncut I think will be PERFECT for Albies. I never even thought about that until I saw you wrapped one of yours spinning. TEh 70MH is a great Fluke rod, and it does well with lighter stuff - but the FW blanks for Bting are much better at that specific task. He didn't say how heavy or deep he was Bting though.

I'm wrapping a 70MH for my Mom now, minus about 2", just in case she goes Porgy fishing and needs 8oz.

Trophy tackle in deer park has a bunch of these rods IN STOCK
which I found cool since there typically made to order
I personally need instant gratification so I bought 2 of the shelf rods.....one acid wrapped (real trick) and a conventional wrap.I put an
accurate 270 2 speed on one and ordered an accurate 30 twinspin for the other. I agree there a little pricey(not to bad) but fighting big game fish on a rod that ways 15 oz?.......thats just plain crazy and hey after the rod just leap a litle more and go for the best as far a reels in concerend. Or 2nd best with an avet and save 500 hundj. Cant go wrong eighter way.
Now just need a wicked inshore bluefin bite ...and its on!

nycguy; The rods you bought from Trophy are far from off the shelf..They are custom. I gave them a good once over & there well design custom wrapped rods..
Like I said in my past posts. I liked them so much I bought some blanks & sold them the next day great rod..The first acid wrapped rod is going to NC for some grouper, amberjack & tuna action..

Kutbait, I've been using Rainshadow blanks for years now. Great blanks for the $ and the Batson components are holding up nicely. Saw your post below on the RCLB series too.

As far as a bay/river bucktail rod try the IP844 w/ the BVS guides. Great blank for jigs up to 1 1/2. I mostly use 3/4 to 1 oz when fishing the rivers and back bays depending on curent.

As a cod rod RCLB80M should fit the bill. I use one in a 7' and the XXNZG guides.

I've been grabbing alot lately my SWB80M when fishing inshore. I could hang 10-12 comfortably with this rod. For the deeper wrecks I'd go with a SWB80MH. Plenty of balls in this rod.

Good luck building!

I would go with GUSA 703DHX and put on fuji concept single foot alconites size 20-10-6 and then alconite fly guides out to the tip size 6-5-5 with as many 5 out to the tip as you want. You could even go smaller on the guides but they are difficult to wrap.
