This thread we can discuss different styles of fluking, weather using whole squid bucktail jigs, what colors working, what type of rig, if the fish wanted slow moving bait or quick moving.

So I just heard from my friend who fished with the Frances Fleet on Sunday for their 1st day of fluking. He said there weren't many people on the boat. He was using a 3/8oz white and 3/8oz crazy chartreuse spro jigs set up as a hi lo rig attaching them to dropper loops with a 5oz sinker for weight. He managed 4 keepers biggest 4 pounds and the fish preferred a slow jig. He also had 8 shorts. He also said there were many shorts on the boat and the pool fish was 6pounds and that it looks like it is shaping up to be a good fluke season.

I really hope that I can get out fluke fishing soon. I have been looking forward to this all winter.

Excellent Idea

This is a great idea, hopefully it will help people plan when/where to go, and what techniques to use.

Can I add something, just for us NYers? Why don't we all keep track this year of how many so-called "shorts", say between 18" and 20", that we throw back .

What areas do you think will produce on Thursday? Will the bluefish be a factor in Greenport?
With the late start I'm not sure where to start my season.

I have always done well the entire month of May fishing the Greenport and Greenlawns areas. Blues can be a pain on occasion, better than having to deal with horned dogs, though, IMHO. Montauk can be good this time of year, too ( I am speaking from a standpoint of potential for keepers).

There should still be plenty of fluke at the lawns. They dont really move to Gardiners until June. The blues are in the bay in force so I would think that they will be somewhat of a problem but usually its not out of control.

The Lawns and Jessups will still have fish, along with the Blues and platter sized Porgies (Be sure to start to the west though and make some drifts in the "hole" east of Robbins Island for some Weakies first thing in the a.m.) IMHO the best May and half of June spot is Shinne**** from the east cut on south through the inlet to the sea bouy and reef. As June rolls on the fishing gets better as you go east down the beach towards the castle on to the east'ard down Mecox way. The same pattern goes for Peconics/Gardiners, as the fish move east from Peconic bay to Gardiners/Ruins area the same time of the calendar

Montauk

Fished the south side today in 60' of water off radar tower. Plenty of fish but 8 keepers for 6 guys. East swell could have had some impact but it was great to get out. Spearing on teasers were the choice today. All the keepers were in the 4 lb range with the biggest going 4.5 lbs. Just the begining of the season. Boats that headed more west did not do better

What's This Year's Catchphrase?

I think Capt. Neil coined the "throwback" phrase for last year's shorts.

A 20" throwback just doesn't sound right. :(
:( Maybe I'm losing my marbles with these new regs.

Any suggestions (not on my mental condition...lol)?

Got to the Peconic Star at 7am to find a decent crowd. Squeezed into the bow. Left at 8am with 60 fares. The music was fine. Capt. Dave should sell CD's. I had a good am with 3 keepers to 6# and 3 shorts on Spros. Fished near the dock. My streak died after 11am. I then watched a couple of guys CRUSH the fish while I had a 4 hr lunch. Silver bullet with hi-lo bucktails aka the Northern Blvd rig. They each dropped more keepers at the boat than I ended up with. One was claimed to be 10# and lost at the net. Tough call, but certainly bigger than his buddy's pool fish (hair under 8# on my Boga in the bow of a running boat after the pool was settled) Every drift was hot for them and they threw back many 20"+ fish. I think that their 2 limits included nothing under 5#. Most of the other folks picked. Guy to the left of me pulled a doubleheader keeper after countless spider crabs on a 2 hook bait rig at one point. Guy to the right of me had a keeper and dropped a 5# fish while swinging it, he did not fish that much, next to him had many of the smallest shorts on the boat using dyed squid, etc. I did nada in the pm. 90% of the folks had keepers, and I saw several limits. 50% of the fish were keepers. 50% of the keepers were slobs, 4#+. Quality was in the house. Dave reported 70 keepers for the boat. I think that was low......

Hi Mike,

How about "Heart Break Fluke"???

Maybe "Coronary Causing Fluke"???

Or "I can't believe I just released THAT fluke"!!!

Just wait till you folks have to release a 20 3/8" beauty!!!

Neil

Capt. Neil - I was thinking about "heart break" however I like your last one even better. Now all we need is a snazzy acronym for it - too long to type in every report.
