Give my Bullet Rig a try

If you rig the Bullet with a trailer hook, you will pull mucho skates, cutting down on the time for a legit shot at decent fish.

Try rigging the bullet as I describe in this linked post:

Fluke Bullet Rig/Report

This past season (After about the middle of July), the fish REALLY wanted Blue 1/4oz bucktail teasers, home-tied with Blue Krystal Flash and sweetened with a medium-sized spearing. Don't use too large a spearing as the fish will come up behind it and chop it in two. Smaller is better.

i'm no expert but , what do you guys think of leaving the hook on the bullet and using a leader with another hook, i was thinking best of both worlds.

BigBillyBass is 100% absolutely right! On very rare occasions I take of the bullet's hook... But in most cases... I keep it on and I also use a high teaser tipped with a strip or spearing.

Here is my buddy Dan with his personal best doormat caught on the bullet and a high hook combo. You will notice that the doormat took the bottom rig. ;)

Bullets

CA:

I'm with you on this one. I use a three way rig with a 6oz bullet on a 12 inch leader and a fluke spearing sandwich trailing on a 12 to 14 inch leader. I also tip the bullet with squid, spearing or both. I find that both the bullet and trailer catch, some days one slightly out does the other but its usually pretty even.

a short 8" leader run of the bullet attached to your teaser of choice works better than the hook attached directly to the bullet. you seem to get a better hookset, and once hooked, the fluke is less likely to throw the hook. when fluke shake their heads, the weight of the bullet can dislodge the hook. by all means rig another teaser on a short leader above the bullet as well.

some question the need for a bullet at all !! A rig as i described, with a sinker instead of the bullet, fished as you would a bullet rig, works great.

Bullets

I fish bullets 95% of the time i go fluke fishing. There are several ways to rig a bullet , depending on conditions and what the fluke want on that day.
The bay calls for a light bullet. 1 ounce tops. I really like the 3/4 ounce ones best when you can get away with using one on a light tide or shallow water.15 lb fl. carbon leader 18 inches long tied to a barrel swivel.A traier hook is a must on the bullet. It will increase your hook up ratio.White is the color at start then fades to green. No teaser is used when fishing with the light bullets. But a trailer hook connected to the hook on the bullet is a must.

There are many ways to rig them when you get outside the inlet in deeper water........

CA - I LOVE using 1/2 - 1oz Lima Beans for Fluke, it's just not easy to find places to use jigs this light, and I have no boat. I just ordered about 100 jigheads so I can tie them up in a zillion colors. I think I like bucktailing for Fluke as much as any other fishing I do.

PS: Lima Beans sink faster, and I can use a lighter jig than if I were to use a similarly weighted Smilin Bill.

Regarding the Bullet - to each his own, if you found something that works for you, stick with it. I use them in deeper water or when I cannot use a 1oz bucktail. Also rig up my son/wife with 2 & 3oz bullets for Reynolds channel fishing, which I do most.

Heads? Nope tails

Al-

I almost exclusively use tails op to maybe 40 ft.It seems to be a little secret that is gaining in popularity over the years.I fish mainly North shore mid Island. I have experimented with dozens of combinations but have settled on a standard 1 oz spro tied directly to 15lb fluorocarbon and a 1/2 spro about 8 in. higher on a dropper or surgeons loop.both in white with only a squid sweetener..This is my opening hand-if no action I go lighter/heavier and change color and/or strips.I really hate dragging around hooks and sinkers(or bullets) if possible.Last season though the fluke were in deeper waters so heavy metal it was

This was the 1st year I used bullets , hard to change old habits . Anyway I found they worked great , better then I expected and will now use them more often . I rigged them hook on ball and leaders up to 2' off the ball . But allways added a high hook 3/4 to 1 oz bucktail , 1' to 1' 1/2" above the the ball . Man that looked good in the water and produced very well with some nice size fish . long Squid strips spit and large spearing .

Bullets continued,

Once you get into deep water, bullet rigs change more often.
When i have a dead stand still tide.Wind against tide, no wind or what not. This is a time when bullets really have there day in the sun. My rig will consist of a bullet just heavy enough to hold bottom.Up to about 70 feet i have gotten away with as little as 3 ounces.5 would be more of the norm and i have used 5 ounces in as deep of water as 115 ft.Leave the hook on the bullet and add a trailer hook. (like they use on spinnerbaits for bass in fresh water). A 3 ft leader of 30 lb fl. carbon tied to the bullet with two dropper loops placed above the bullet. One loop about 6 in. above and another about 10 in. above that. On the droppers i connect teasers. diff. colors untill you find what color the fluke like that day. This rig i only use on no tide conditions. It is the only time i will leave the hook directly on the bullet with a trailer attached directly to it.The reason for this is that i have found fluke are really attracted the the ball it self when its banging of the bottom with no drift. Its basiclly sitting in the same spot calling the fluke over to it instead of drifting by them.
Your hook set must be imediate upon feeling the strike. There is no dropping back on a fluke when there is no tide! When the tide is moving i will remove the hook from the bullet because it drops so many fish. That is the bullets downfall. It draws so many more strikes then other rigs, and drops alot of fish too.At first it was very frustrating to me dropping some big fish half way up.

Thats when i really started trying diff. ways to rig my bullets on a moving tide.

More rigs soon to come, and what conditions work with them......

Bucktails in any form.........smilin bill, bullets or spros are great. This year the Spro's were best IMHO. I always tie a small smilin bill 1/4 ounce as a teaser 12 inches before the bottom bucktail on dropper loop. Some days, 80% of the fish are caught on it. Trimming the bucktail hair to the end of the hook helps cut down on the short bites. As for where to use em....I used them everywhere including 2 ounce ones on the southside one day. Flourocarbon leader is a plus on days the fish are picky. Tip em with spearing.

Bucktails

I use a bucktail with a 5" leader tied to a 3way swivel and a 3'leader with a feather hook. I bait both hooks with spearing and a strip of something. You must use braided line to hold bottom because your bucktail is your sinker. I have fished 3oz bucktails and held bottom reasonably well while everyone around me was useing 8 and 10oz's. I catch more fish and have more fun fishing for fluke this way.
