Is there a necessary permit to launch from Floyd Bennet Field? Or can I just stroll right in there and dump my kayak? Please let me know I would like access quite a bit to that area.

Yak Permit !

Yes you need a permit to launch. The cost is $50 for the year. You need to bring your license & registration along with a check or cash to the Ryan Visitor Center in FBF. You can register more than one vehicle for the same pass but need to bring the other vehicle registrations also. I forgot to ask if there are other launch locations besides hangar B but I'm sure they will give you that info if you purchase a permit. Good Luck out there.

Speak to a Park Ranger named John, he knows the scoop. You can definitely launch from the ramp at Hangar B. I've seen many people do it. They even hold a kayack show at that location every May with dozens of manufacturers displaying their products and accessories. You can also take the yaks for a spin. Whichever person gave you the info doesn't know what they are talking about. The info I gave you is correct and was obtained on the day of your 1st post by me stopping at the Ryan Visitor Center and speaking with Park Ranger John personally. Some of these Rangers just like other federal employees haven't a clue. Bring your license, registration and payment with you and I guaratee you'll get a permit for launching a kayack at Floyd Bennett Field. Just trying to help you out but you have to do the leg work.

Went over there today and spoke to them. Can only launch from hangar B. Thats a far paddle to the MPB. I might as well launch from the end of Gerritsen Ave or find a spot in Dead Horse Bay, since that's the main area I want to fish the MPB. Probably possible to launch somewhere from Barren Island too which is even better. That didn't really say "no you can't do that, but if you see someone carrying a Kayak across Flatbush ave, thats me! haha

Thanks for the info Steamboat, you know a lot im suprised you aren't kayaking as well haha.

Your welcome for the info. I wouldn't be so fast to give up launching from there. The other locations you mention are just as far or further from the MPB. Hangar B is just around the corner from the bridge. There is much more to explore from back there in more protected waters. There are many great fishing spots very reachable from Hangar B by kayack. You have all of J-Bay with all the islands and there many holes & channels right out from that sight & are only reachable by Kayack or a boat with very little draft. Spend some time back there & speak with the many other Kayackers that launch from there & you might be surprised by what you learn. Not that you don't do alright by yourself just trying to give you some helpful advice.
Good luck fishing from wherever you decide to launch.

Bt the way Baren Island Marina & Dead Horse Bay is the same thing.

We'll see how fast I get bored of fishing the creek
I don't really want to mess with Plumb Beach due to heavy boat traffic around there but that would be a spot I'd Fluke for sure. I'm going to try and get more familiar with the area, the Mill Basin bridge has some really deep holes so maybe I can find some nice Fluke around there.
