Crazy and the rest of the fishing fanatics....

I recently heard about Flounder being caught from shore in the northern end of CT (i.e. Mystic/Norwich areas).

I usually don't start fishing for Flounder until my hangover wears off after St. Patty's Day. But the curiosity is killing. I dug some bait this afternoon and I'm heading to a private beach (don't worry, I'm allowed) in Westbrook. Now Westbrook isn't as far north as the locations mentioned, but figured I'd hit the beach anyway to alleviate the cabin fever. :)

Have any of you heard of Flounder being caught, especially from shore in the CT. area? I would appreciate your input.

Hi Soundfisher,

Although this sounds like a good idea?but don't do it!

I am 100% sure that there is NO such thing as ?catch & release? flounder fishing!

So what do you do with the Flounder you catch? Personally, I love the taste of the fish and would only take what I truly need and then leave.

What happens when you accidentally catch Flounder while bottom fishing?

I only ask because you made it sound like I was targeting them just to throw them back into the water while injured.

Please explain. Thanks.

Hi Soundfisher,
I enjoy eating flounder and that?s one of the species my wife (and family) enjoys eating too. However, on several occasions when I caught some nice 3-4 lbs. snowshoes during the off season (Montauk) ? I was very happy to let them go. :)

Just an FYI: I am not saying that you are targeting them just to throw them back. Since I often get questions about C&R flounder fishing? and that the season is closed in NY waters (Opens March 16)? I felt it?s the perfect opportunity to inform those who are not too familiar with the law.

Anyway? The warm winter weather that we are having? I am sure the flounder are there! Catch them up and don?t forget to chum! ;)

I should have mentioned the CT Flounder regulations are different than in New York. I check the DEP website and there in no "off-season" in CT.

Thanks for clarifying what you had said earlier. I am a big fan of our flat friends and hope they remain a viable sport fish for years to come.
