I don't have high expectations for this year.In the last few years the best have come when the bays freeze. That never happen this year. Not that it has been good for a while I always average 6-7 fish a man on my boat.

I can't remember the last time I went flounder fishing, I do remember it was from shore in the shark river somewhere and before that a rental boat same river... that was well over 15yrs ago and even back then it was always spotty. I might try it again good spring weather with a couple old friends.

If you launch early every year there?s not a lot else that you can do.
There are a few channels between some islands and the mainland near my port and, if we get any, it will be during a moving tide in 3 to 12? or so.
This pic represents a banner day from last April 07. I think I had five fish that day but one was borderline so it went back.

I'm a firm believer in making two of your reliable spots work for you. Markers and chum consistantly and you can have yourself a nice reliable spot. It's great when you pull up and bang 1-3 fish in the first five minutes. Chum it again before you leave. If you can do this a couple times a week you'll be in good shape, just dont't over feed them. Take advantage of slack water and dead winds for ultra-slow drifts. Sometimes covering ground can put you on meat and then you throw the anchor. Last year I got 1-3 fish in an hour on the yak which makes a nice meal for the family and expect to get that many again.
PS- Early DLST Sunday is going to give us some extra light for some early afternoon trips!

Thanks, Rydogg.
Any day you can put a more then a couple of flounder in the boat in Western LIS is a very good day.
Another bonus was that it was unseasonably warm and calm for April.

Mojoe if you took pics of the flatties and tomatoes at the same time then they must have been from the fall run. Ya ?
(If you can harvest beauties like those by late spring please PM me with your green thumb secrets).

Ihavegills, we can?t start on flounder till April fools so early DLST wont help much.

Hopefully, us Jamaica Bay guys will get a shot at those flounder before the blue demons show up and shut the bite down. Like DCBassin said, the bay never froze this year (nor last year) and that is not a good omen.

What I found happened last year with the late start (April 1) and the warm winter, by the time we dropped our first baits and pounded our first chum pots, the flounder were on the move already towards the head of the bay. All of our usual "hot spots" were barren when we fished them probably because the water temps in the bay were already to warm to hold the fish.

We had a few good days in the bay but the majority of the better fishing was done once the fish left the bay and started massing near Romer Shoal. I think the early arrival of those blue toothy critters also hurt our bite.

I personally love flounder fishing. When it's done right it's a ton of work but when you catch 'em up, it's just as much fun as anything else. Problem these days is that gas, bait & chum are so expensive, it makes you feel like it's not worth the effort to go out and catch 5 or 6 fish. I mean really, how much are a dozen worms these days? It's insane!
