Flounder season is three weeks away, boys. Anyone in a hurry for opening day? The past 8 years or so the flounder fishing has been pathetic. Will it ever improve where one can catch a limit every once in awhile? Seems the best time for a decent catch is in late April, especially in the sound.

Hey Flounder, I cant give a real prediction on this topic. But I can tell you this its going to take at least mid to late April for them to come up on the holes. Water been the coldst in years!! As far as the north shore ahh just aint worth it!! Im out of Setauket Habor which can hold some flatties but late in the Season. Also we got Huntighton Habor but with all the expenses of flounder fishing chum chum and chum its not worth it . Put the boat on the trailer and go to the south shore some many spots which all have the rite time to be there. But no doubt in mind I will be sitting out side of Shinock Canal in 3 weeks!!!!!

Flounder

Lots of guys have given up on even trying to fish for them. I have a different outlook, I am hoping this season will be a little bit better than the past few due to the cooler temps. Past years have been above average, and we have had limited catches. Maybe this will actually help. It may be a later start but hopefully a condensed season. Captbush summed it up pretty well chum = money, and we all know chum is the key.

Take a look in the General fishing fourm, There is some talk in there as well....

The fall run is suppossedly an indicator of the spring run, which in theory makes sense. You would figure that all you have to do is be out there to catch from *the body of fish that winter over*.It doesn't always hold true though, at least according to the reports.

Last fall, my buddy called me practically after every trip, and he caught from 12 to 32 flounder for about 2 weeks at (censored, sorry). Then, the skates took over. But all told, that was a favorable indicator.

Funny thing though....the year before they instituted the December 1st cut off, We caught NOTHING all fall until the second week of December, at the Ruffle Bar near Floyd Bennet Field. Then, it was one of the best run in years until Christmas time, 35+ fish a trip.

With that in mind, there could be a big body of fall fish, and we wouldn't even know about it!

Hipshot Ive fished it alot in 2000. Its pretty productive but I said to myself if Im driving all the way out here Im going bassing. Its ok but sporadic. I did much better sitting out side Shinock Canal which is half the drive. Also Bettys bite in Marion has produced better!!

Its gonna be a good one

Im hoping it will be a good one. Ill be at the canal opening day with the thousand others in hopes of catching some keepers. Last Fall sucked but the spring before that was the best Ive ever seen, I got atleast 4 keepers (many returned) every day at the locks. I think with this cold weather to kill all the algae and bacteria in the water the fishing should be good, although it may take some time to get off the ground...man I cant wait!

Capt. Bush,
I know about Petty's Bight but have not fished it. It's app. a 12-13 mi. run from my dock and have to go through the gut to get there. Long trip for some IFFY flounder lately. Was hopeing to get some time on my 16' privateer before the main fishing season started. My mechanic says I don't use it enough! Want to try the locks, Smiths Point bridge and anyother place I can find to catch some flounder! I miss the old days where you caught much more than you could use!
